I may or may not be in a minority here..

I for one like short films.. 10-15 minutes.

So much of what I'm seeing is falling flat due to the low quality aspirations of 'producers'.

One thing that will definately stop me buying or watching..
is a superheroine sex-scene, where the only superheroine element
is the costume.

The superheroine costume being merely a substitute for the usual stockings & suspenders.

Another thing I hate, are 'stories' or scenarios taking place in someones's house,
or on their sofa/couch !

Yes I know budget is a prime consideration.
But please.. can we have some imagination ???

An interesting set-up/scenario starts with imagination and ideas.

Likewise develop some technical competence please.
Lighting a scene well doesn't have to cost a fortune.
Also take some pride in your camera-work and sound quality people.

The problem is.. anybody with a camera, computer and a few bucks
can call themself a producer now;
( like anybody with a computer calling themself a music producer).

And while there are those trying their best with limited means,
I think there are many more no-talent, buck-chasers at work these days.

The truth is, there is way too much garbage out there.

Hotel rooms can be even worse than someone's house. I don't mind too much it's done diegetically and the heroine says she's tracked the villain down to a hotel room. However, it's just plain ridiculous to pretend that a hotel room is the villain's lair.

"Behold my small plastic kettle, Ms Marvel. You will feel its POWER!"

Male villains in shorts and T-shirts always look sloppy. Honestly, something as simple and classic as a black suit would make all the difference. I want to see superheroines defeated by people who mean business, not pizza delivery guys.

But my biggest bugbear must be this atrocity:

Image

This genre is all about suspension of disbelief. I'm willing to accept a fantasy world in which people can fly, deflect bullets, shoot laser beams from their eyes and travel in time. But I will not accept that any superheroine would go out to work in a $20 outfit from a party shop.
"A brass unicorn has been catapulted across a London street and impaled an eminent surgeon. Words fail me, gentlemen."

Hello Heroine Addict.

I concur. Everything you said hit the target.. and raised a smile.

In addition to party shop outfits, is the casting of your friends, who
look completely unlike any hero/villain you could ever believe in.

Also along with hotel rooms.. I put forward parking lots &
the rear of buildings/shops for staging fight scenes.

I know I'm repeating myself.. But I really think imagination and taking
some pride in your work, goes a long way.

Truth be told, I think 10-15 minutes is a bit too little to set anything interesting up and have time for superheroine peril. What you and Heroine Addict said is quite correct, but looking back at how films were made several years ago and how (some) are done today, I think we are on the right track for bigger, better things.

I guess ultimately it's down to what you want to do. You can go for a movie with higher production values, deeper characterization and story and a meaningful idea which is expressed through something deemed unthinkable in our culture, namely an avatar of what is deemed "good" losing to those representing what is "evil", or you can just make porn. Producers will naturally go for what is cheapest to make while returning the biggest revenue, so it all starts with having an audience with higher standards.

I am also not fond of basic hotel rooms or stories based on couches or a single basic room but apartments can be great if the director is determined to make a great product.
Just look at Alex David she often used her whole apartment or one of the actresses whole apartment, in the first Lady Death film Alex used her bathroom, kitchen, starway and a few other parts too and she even added some footage from outside her apartment as well, it is one of the very best overall customs I have ever had made.

Hello Ezekiel

10-15 mins is short I know.
30 mins or more certainly provides more scope to develop a story, characters,
ideas etc, as you rightly point out.

I was dreaming recently about financing a custom you see.
I figured 10-15 minutes would be cheaper to fund.
I don't want to do just cheap porn disguised as Superheroine.

My approach would be to begin mid-story (like those old 1930's serials),
or even those old Bugs Bunny cartoons. Fast set-up of a scenario, then
as crazy as you can be for the next 10 minutes.. lol

It may not be possible to tell a full story in so short a time,
I think a scenario-based short film is possible with this approach.

If the set-up is good.. If the ideas for the scene are interesting,
then it can still be fulfilling, engaging and entertaining.

Now all I need is some money and a good custom company to go ahead !

That's my dream.. lol

15 minutes is really short if the characters aren't established - but it's your custom order so at that point, choose whichever length and story you want - only YOU need to be happy with it lol

I agree with everything that's been said there, especially about the bad/cheap party costumes (which I have complained about many times before).

Lol I just filmed one of my videos and intentionally bought the cheesiest Halloween costumes to prove a point. We will be releasing it next week I believe. We'll see how it does ;)

What's the point you are trying to prove? That no matter how good the producer, stars, and story are, a lousy costume can ruin the video? :-P

As for quality control, doesn't it just come down to the size of the producer/director's ambition and financial means? Most of the super heroine videos started with Halloween costumes or hand-made costumes with villains wearing backwards hats or civilian clothes. I remember a "how to destroy a super heroine" series a long time ago that was released in two 2-minute installments weekly (I think it was on superheroinecentral.com). Paris Kennedy played the role of the Supergirl-type heroine and a guy with a backwards hat who looked like a normal 20-something was having his way with her (having been weekend by kryptonite) in a living room.
As the genre has spread and as more people are now buying super heroine peril videos, producers and directors are able to take more chances as (it would seem to me) the rewards from a well-made video are more and more worth the risk. But without the aforementioned hotel room videos, I doubt we would have what is currently being sold.
Now as for the current hotel room or living room videos, I have to admit that having been spoiled by several quality producers today I have a hard time spending money on such videos.

I know I'd like to do more studio shoots. Availability for a decent one isn't necessarily there in my neck of the woods. As soon as I'm done with this year's shoots (either wrapping up in August or September likely), the plan is to either shut things down for 2015 or find a good studio somewhere that can be used. That way I don't have to worry about the hotels and suites.

I remember one clip we did, we poked fun at ourselves a bit with the villain bemoaning having to use a hotel room as his lair was being renovated. It's just one of those things. The producers who are able to use the awesome costumes as well as settings (studios and otherwise) certainly have my admiration.

Quite the opposite. That you can still have a good Superheroine video and costumes aren't everything. You can check it out (or just look at the screen caps and trailer) once it releases. It's called Midnight Rescue. It was a fun episode full of costume destruction, blood, peril, and a lot of brutality and some sexual peril.

There's a lot of talk about costumes but I believe it really comes down to the content more than what they're wearing. Don't get me wrong - having a good costume is way better. But it's definitely not going to make or break a video.

I really did not realise just how expensive using sets & locations
can be. Or getting great looking costumes.

I'm a lot more forgiving of the "superheroine" in a house setting now..lol
I might even forgive the party shop costume too.. or maybe not..lol

Numbers don't lie. Mid byte Rescue broke records. And I shot it with store-bought costumes.

@logan

Midnight rescue was fucking awesome. I don't hope it's a regular thing, but occasionally I hope you roll out some pretty brutal / bloody beatdowns like that one just to change things up a bit.

Well, those costumes might not be expensive, but they are good. Except for that skirt on the Robin costume, which you wisely dispensed with part-way through the video. :)

Still, your point is made. You win this round, but I will have my... wait... what am I doing...?

That's funny and it seems like i'm the minority here too :D
The costume is mainly what makes me buy or not buy a video. When I like the costume, I can buy a video with a content I usually dislike. When I don't like the costume, I won't buy the video, even when I would like the content.
The motivating factor for me is the combination of the actress and the costume.

Haha, my phone changed Midnyte to Mid byte and I didn't realize it. I'm gonna leave it like that lol

Everyone has their thing... when it comes to costumes - I'm a big fan of a well done costume - but I knew I was going to destroy the costumes to the point that they couldn't be worn again. So I could cut up $200 worth of costumes or $1,000 worth - I didn't feel like pissing away $800 by destroying custom-made costumes ;)

lol actually, I read on a thread (I think it was on this forum) about how much someone HATED that Robin costume - so I bought it intentionally. The skirt was the source of contention with it so I was like "I'm gonna use that costume just because I know people don't like it-- then I'm gonna destroy the skirt and remove that because that's the part no one likes" - and that was my point - that with good content and smart use of what you have, that you can still create a really cool video... even if not everyone agrees with me, I personally LOVE that video - it's a different edge to a classic set of Heroines and I wanted to do a Batman & Robin.... with girls... I'm working on a bunch of different concepts over here so I'm excited to get those up and running :)

That was probably me. That costume sucks ass, big time, and it's been used in literally dozens of videos.
The shiny is just wrong and the skirt is an abomination.
I must admit, there is some satisfaction in seeing it destroyed.

I agree that the costumes for Midnite Rescue were awful. I'm a fan of your studio, but I gotta say it. Never the less the movie was of great, great quality.

I hope you continue but invest more in the costumes. You probably cant rip it up as much as the last ones but it's just that I expected a bit better from Heroine Legends.

When we wrote that script, we knew we were destroying the costumes. There was no way I was going to spend $1,000 and just tear it up. So we bought the costumes we could find in our area that fit the characters we were going for. If the costumes were not getting shredded, we would have put more money into it - but I can 1,000% guarantee you that the extra $800 in costumes would not have made one ounce in difference in the number of sales on that video. So it would have been $800 pissed away for no reason. Gotta pick your battles...

Well yes, the costumes of Midnyte rescue were cheesy, but as a personal experience, I got it for 2 reasons:

1) Sophie.

2) The effects, from the pics I wanted to see, while I don't like blood in heroine,s how the special effects came about in the blood scenes. And man, that was brutal!

Especially the uppercut with the sledge hammer to Midnyte.. I shake just by remember looking at it, it seemed like she was beheaded or something, same with the one to Sophie's belly, that looked worst than in WWE in the 90's and those were the days of brutality.

Yeah that makes sense. The Robin costume wasn't all that bad imo, but the Batwoman costume was something you shouldn't go back to. ;)
