Now, they are once again! (the worm is finally turning)
New York comics writer Kat Calamia, who also goes under the name "Comic Uno" for her Youtube channel, once had an interesting superhero comic about a girl who took over the superheroine trade from her busted-up superhero father, and their relationship. It was a bit like Stargirl meets Invincible. The interior artist who drew the first six issues of that was Pittsburgh's Wayne Brown. Around the time Wayne's stint with Kat was winding down, we hired Wayne to be one of the two interior artist for Heroineburgh Comics (he still is, having finished his part for upcoming Issue 4) and the rest is history.
After that, Kat Calamia did a bunch of books about magical stuff and queer slice-of-life topics. I wasn't really interested.
But right now, she and her writing partner Phil Falco have been writing a work-for-hire for the West Virginia-based Bad Bug Comics,
run by Mike and Alice Tener. One of the 'wings' of Bad Bug Comics is an "NSFW" imprint with books that are too risque to be offered at comicons
but can be funded through Kickstarter. We've been at a couple of West Virginia comicons where we met Mike and Alice - Bad Bug sells their mainstream books out in the open at the booth, and the NSFW stuff under wraps.
And that's exactly what they're doing here with "Bombshell and Atomica" #1. Yes, not very original names (see below) but a very sexy concept:
Two hot chicks met in a factory during WWII and got superpowers from an accident. They go back to their husbands when the war ends, but
they are secretly in love, and both of them are also superheroines in very tight spandex. They can work together to fight supervillains, yes, but the catch is because of their powers, THEY CAN'T TOUCH EACH OTHER. (So, I guess one answer might be dildos, but I'm sure there are others.)
I don't exactly know how the story is going to play out, but the content is definitely NSFW.
You can pick from a whole bunch of Nice and Naughty covers such as the ones below, and back the Kickstarter if you so choose.
And now for my comment about the superheroine names Bombshell and Atomica. They are super generic and overused. I'm assuming that the point is not to be "original" about it, especially since their civilian names are also literally Betty and Veronica.
But I'd like to note that there are not only several superheroines named Bombshell, but also the recent Indiegogo crowdfund for Clint Hilinski's character Blue Bombshell (a campaign which I backed) which seems to be based on the Penthouse Comix aesthetic. As far as other sexy "Bomb" characters, there's also Jimmie Robinson's Bomb Queen.
And meanwhile....Atomica? Come on! Not only are there are whole bunch of "Atom" heroes and heroines, but the classic reference is from Love and Rockets: Penny Century's superheroine name was Atomica. The pint-size supervillainess of the Crime Syndicate (DC) was also Atomica.
Not to mention "Annatomica" from the recent Shane Davis crowdfund Inglorious Rex.
In short, this idea is sexy and fun (as long as it's not trying to teach anyone a didactic lesson about 'how hard it was to be a lesbian in the 50s' and is just there for the entertainment value) but in my opinion, they could have thought of different character names that stand out a bit more.
But it is what is.
I'm wondering if Bad Bug is going to want to turn this into a softcore porn franchise? Seems like there'd be plenty of room in the market now that Alex Braun has retired. Anyone up for filming it???
