New dc reboot: Ruining women's sex appeal?

I don't know if you guys heard but dc is relaunching all of their books in September including 50 costume changes....but here is the worst news of all. All the superheroines now have to wear pants:

http://www.bleedingcool.com/2011/06/01/ ... -trousers/

That means no more skirts on Supergirl or Mary marvel. I already was going to drop my dc books before this but this solidifies it. However there is some good news the original red-haired batgirl is back.

Thoughts?

Frankly, utterly ridiculous. They are getting rid of their key market for the sake of being more 'pc'.

Admittedly there have recently been more and more girls and women interested in comics, however the key demographic for comics is still young men between 13 and 25. The answer to bridge the gap is to make new comics to attract women and girls - not to destroy their current market appeal.

Though having said that, I know alot of women who are more than content with the comics as they are.

I really hope that this is all a sick joke!

Or, maybe, it is just a dream; yes, I'm dreaming this, and I should be waking up any time now.
I'll just keep telling myself that...

Oh well, at least all of my heroines are still extremely scantily-clad.
And they will remain so, until I breathe my last...

Just... wow. I really wonder what motivates this. It seems like an almost desperate move on their part. But I could imagine any number of reasons for it.

- A reaction against the fallout from the Wonder Woman pilot in some way? They really didn't seem to want to use the old star-spangled panties, there.
- Political pressure from the left, via the feminist movement?
- Political pressure from the right, via the neo-puritan religious groups?
- Reaction against the mainstreaming of superhero/ine fetishism via the recent porn parody lines?
- Reaction against the very superheroine fetish represented by this very site, along with so very, very many others across the internet?
- An effort to repackage the 'franchises', to be better able to grow into some foreign market(s) where exposed female legs would be particularly objectionable?
- Repackaging to create new designs over which they can establish greater copy control, preventing use in things like porn parodies, fan art, or fetish productions?
- A purely esthetic and design-driven move, perhaps engineered by a high-profile creative type who's risen in the ranks (*cough* Jim Lee *cough*)?
- A response to advance notice of some new legislation or political move to try to de-sexualize pop culture, perhaps in response to porn parodies?
- Just an attention-getting ploy, in which the rebooted continuity won't even last as long as Marvel's ill-fated (& ill-conceived) New Universe line?

I assume the move is motivated by the desire to make the 'franchises' more profitable. Political pressure could play into this, but I don't see that, alone, being the root cause. If it is, that pressure would presumably be coming from a group with a strong voice and good media representation.

It will be interesting to see where this goes. DC pretty much died to me in 1986-7, though, so I don't feel any great stake in the matter.

I agree, that's when they'll get there act together. Talk about alienating the key market! Anyway, atleast we have sites like this and others to keep the sexy in superheroines alive and just for us.

So...why do they expect anyone to be interested in buying those comics now? Not the strength of their storylines, I hope.

If that move works for DC, so be it. We have our specialty sites which will continue to cater to us until we stop giving them our money (which is to say, until the end of time). But I suspect that, as was already noted, when DC's sales of Wonder Woman and Supergirl plummet, they may reverse this decision.

Doesn't it seem the just like a bit of a hypocrisy that DC is doing this at the exact same time they keep advertising a new Green Lantern movie that seems to be about how the hero looks with his shirt off? We have to see shirtless males with ripped abs constantly on TV, in movies, etc. Comic book males have overly tight costumes and overly perfect bodies. Yet DC is calling the sight of a woman's leg pornographic.

DC should feel backlash on their message boards for this as well. Who cares about the idiots who take charge on their message boards. Flood them with complaints. Drop all of your DC books and for god sake let the comic book store owner know the reason why. If we go quietly on this and just hope DC understands why their sales drop, we will fail. We have to hit back. After all, the message board idiots and a few bloggers brought about this change by constantly running their mouths.

Dude-

this is part one of the major changes. the other big rumor is Lois lane is OUT and Superman will now be dating Wonder Woman. Which is insane. Both of them have admitted they would never hook up. Story wise fetish-wise and costume-wise dc is making a HUGE mistake. And this is just the small wave of changes that are coming.....

LEGS are the ONLY reason DC heroines pawn Marvel's!I mean I don't find any Marvel gals having the same popularity and prominence as WW, Supergirl or Powergirl...heck even Zatanna and Black Canary!Ok maybe some do but I certainly don't like them as much.

Thank god Batgirl is completely unaffected by this...wait I spoke too soon...she might wear baggy pants next!

That's a very good point! I'm well out of touch with comic books these days, but my feeling is that the decision isn't really about sex appeal but about "realism". Look at the X-men movies where they all wore identical full body leather outfits. Frankly that's the reason I stopped buying comic books a long time ago, because of the trend towards "darker, realistic" stories. In my case it was when they killed Captain America, and then brought him back in that armored suit bristling with weapons belts! No way!

That is one of my disappointments with the new X-Men movie. Although we do get a single solitary eye candy(never been a fan of blue skin):

Image

Sadly I suspect she will be wearing that less than a quarter of the time. It's funny how Marvel comics are more realistic these days, because in TV and movies the opposite seems to be happening; we get the Spider-Mans, mutants and alien-gods. While DC is banking on the non-powered Batman, they are only just experimenting with GL, and got their WW rejected :(

Argghh. I already hate what they did with Wonder Woman's re-design..now no more Black Canary in fishnets or Supergirl in a skirt?

DC has the best superheroines, bar none. I hope they don't go through these changes or at least have some alternate earth comic where we can see the classic designs.

It burns their eyes me thinks. Action movie babes can wear anything and be considered hot, but superheroines showing their thighs=social uproar, abuse of women, world war III etc.

And they don't have a case for calling it "campy", for as long as the Superman costume is accepted.

First off, there is no confirmation as to whether or not all the heroines are getting their bare legs taken away. The only change we've seen is the Wonder Woman costume that has been around for the past year.

This revamp, from what I'm hearing, is a last ditch effort by DC to raise sales. The comic book industry is losing money hardcore, and they're trying to advertise a fresh start to try and lure readers back. Whether the readers left due to craptastic story or shitty economy is up in the air.

Until the solicits come out later this month, we won't know what's going on with heroine costumes. Let's hang tight until then, and maybe we'll be pleasantly surprised. I, for one, really want the comic industry to stay strong, so I'm going to keep buying what I can. Will I like it if Supergirl get's pants? No. Will I still buy the title? Yeah, I'll give it a chance. I still think the current incarnation of Wondergirl is hot, and she just wears jeans.

I refuse to purchase DC Comics based on the fact that Supergirl has shorts under her skirt--- I'm certainly not rushing back for a Supergirl in pants. Obviously this is a hypocrisy. They are declaring that women's bodies are "scary" and "pornographic" and need a set of restrictions applied to them that are not applied to the males. The males are marketed as sex objects... Green Lantern looks like Twilight and no superhero movie is made without showing a shirtless male in the preview.

I'm very apt to believe this rumor because of what DC has already done to Supergirl and Wonder Woman. Furthermore, DC has already released images of a number of titles and all the females so far are wearing pants. An image showing Starfire was released, and though part of her was obscured so it is impossible to say for sure, she did look like she had pants on.

If we say "I won't like Supergirl in pants, but I'll buy it" we just encourage them. They'll keep making the superheroines less and less sexy. We need to remove the DC titles from our pull lists, let the store owners know why, and make some noise. Otherwise, things will keep getting worse. Others have a constant supply of shirtless males offered up to them in every form of media, can't we at least have comic books?

UPDATE: Black Canary no longer has fishnets. She is now in bulky, ugly armor. No legs shown. Starfire looks like she is in pants (but it is not possible to confirm for certain). The "females cannot be as sexy as the males" rules look like they are in full effect. Drop the books, complain, etc. DC sucks. Make mine... Dark Horse.

What's your source, Killorson? No offense, but I don't trust word of mouth.

EDIT: Nevermind, I found the images on newsarama. I'm defenitely upset about Black Canary, but I can't see Starfire clearly enough to judge. She does have a history of wearing REALLY tall thigh-highs after all.

Sorry for the double post, but in that same article, they reveal that Barbara Gordon is going to be Batgirl again! Now, this will please myself and a lot of other fans. But I find a couple of issues with this.

1-What about Stephanie Brown? She's been a good Batgirl. I'm not saying she's better than Barbara, but some fans, such as myself, are a bit invested in the character now.

2-Barbara is TOO OLD in comic chronology to be Batgirl. Batwoman, maybe, but not Batgirl. It's been established that she's in her 30's. The biggest problem here is that there is already a Batwoman. It's just a mess.

I personally hope they don't just throw Stephanie Brown by the wayside. If they invested in the character as Batgirl for this long, they either need to make her her own Bat-Character, or give her an appropriate sendoff.

...because in the end, that's what it boils down to. I detest the dissolving of the Spider-marriage, so I ignore Spiderman.

And it looks like what has to be done here. Funny thing is, the mainstream DC heroines are more tame than the Bad Girl comics of the early 90s, or many, many anime/manga heroines(which fuels my creations  ). What the hell is going on with superheroines in general?

Once again, I'm reminded of Bionic Woman 2007, with her non-sexy outfit and boring storylines.

Well, guess I stick with anime...fanservice rules.

The really weird thing to me is that Image seemed to drive the trend toward those bad girls and books of that sort, and now the big Image guy himself is behind the current heroine designs. (I really hate his design sense, personally. What is his thing with straps? Why couldn't they have Alex Ross do designs? He understands good superhero costume design, which reached its peak with Infantino and J. Buscema. But I digress....)

Are there other things happening with superheroines? ???

I can't find the link now, but I did read about a study concerning sexuality in "children's entertainment" being released in the UK last week. Possibly they're ramping up to their own version of the senate hearings on juvenile delinquency which led to the creation of the CCA.

Or this could be like that thing where skirt hemlines rise and fall along with the stock market. Superheroines stop showing their legs and we know that the economic outlook must be grim.

I do seem to neglect the use of Occam's Razor in my speculations about things like this, however....

I have terribly mixed feelings about Barbara coming back as Batgirl. On the one hand, I love the character and I'm glad she's being restored. On the other, I hate they way they treat characters in comics, nowadays. When the Babs BG was just a flashback character, at least I knew they couldn't screw her up too much. I'll probably check the character out if and when a trade paperback compilation is released.

In addition to the aesthetic changes, I thought I read somewhere that they are also moving up digital copy availability to coincide with the date new books hit the comics stores. I'm thinking this is part of a "bold plan" someone at DC/Time Warner corporate laid out to 'recapture' their past levels of profit. (And it sounds like something you'd hear in a board meeting of stagecoach makers in 1895, wondering how to react to the new 'horseless carriage' threat to their business model.)

The economy downturn in general is part of it, so is the internet effect - but it's not like the comic industry is all that different from the magazine or newspaper trade - and while you can get a magazine subscription for $1 a month, or a daily newspaper on your doorstep for $15 a month.. $4 per book for however many titles you follow each month adds up pretty d-mn quick.

There may be a future for big company online comic distribution, but I'd bet it's more likely to end up with a bunch of individuals adapting the online comic strip model. And that model will be infinitely more sensitive to their audience.

I am totally against the changes ...pants? Really? I knew that wasn't going to go over very well with "real" comic fans.

As soon as it came out that Wonder Woman was going to be wearing those blue pants I knew it was over before it even started..lol..
Geez, I'm a fetish model and I get flack if I'm not wearing the WW costume correctly. ..There is no way it would be welcomed in a television series or on the big screen..

To be quite honest, I was a little concerned of it being a hit...could you imagine all of us models being hunted down and ordered to stop shooting what we are shooting. That would suck.
I love playing WW.

I noticed in the first link on this topic that the super heroines costume is strikingly similar to O-Girl, no one ever mentioned or brought this up ...not that thats an issue, I have just never seen it before.

Love everyones comments and concerns...you guys rock!

Marvel started the trend with releasing back issues on CD-ROMs for readers who couldn't get all the old stories from the earlier comic ages. After all they had already done Masterwork reprints and this was another way to make a buck off their older content.

Digital downloads are aimed at the reader that wants to look at the story and isn't as concerned with keeping the hard copy for a collection or later sale. It makes sense to go for the same people that by ebooks. They want to have something to read on a tablet system. It also costs the companies less since it lowers printing costs and storage of unsold issues.

Wonder Woman, Black Canary, and Zatanna all in pants, sex appeal reduction confirmed for sure. Ranger, DC Comics has already released covers showing new costumes including Zatanna, Black Canary and other heroines who used to show their legs-- now all in pants. DC's site, Newsarama, Bleeding Cool News, Comic Vine, and every other site already confirmed this, picture have been shown, and they are all over the internet.

DC considers women's legs pornographic and the female body scary. At the same time, they have announced a Vampire book with a shirtless, Twilight-esque male on the cover and have a Green Lantern movie emphasizing how good the actor looks with his shirt off.

Again, complain, remove DC titles from pull lists, let store owners know why. We sit back, they'll all be in snow suits with bags over their heads. The female characters keep getting less and less sexy and, if DC thinks its attracting new customers while not losing old ones, they'll keep doing more of the same.

I am amazed at how many people (even on here) say "blah, blah, children, blah, blah, sex." Why is the skin of a woman's leg pornographic and damaging to a child? Why are female bodies so scary? That's sexism and it is indicative of the thought process in Saudi Arabia, sexist Ancient Societies, and the most conservative religious areas of the country-- never strong supporters of women.

The biggest thing is the hypocrisy between genders. Look at the male body types and costumes in comics. I cannot turn on my TV, go to a book store, look at a magazine rack, etc. without seeing a shirtless male with a shaved body and ripped abs. Currently men are objectified and portrayed as sex objects to a much higher degree than females in this country. Have you ever heard how some women behave around these shirtless men? Men would be in deep trouble if we acted the same way. And these sexed up men are often marketed toward tween and teen girls (Twilight, CW Shows, Magazines, etc.) The hypocrisy pisses me off the most. If the country is going to become so prudish, lets be the first country to not be so sexist about it. Get rid of the shirtless males too. Call them sluts too. Call women go nuts over them creepy too. Personally, I prefer a more open society where we don't have to hide so much from our natural desires. But let's stop being so sexist if we are going to be prudes.

Well seems that I'll have even more reason to keep writing, to have our favorite ladies from DC in their proper costumes at the very least. Makes me sad for Supergirl and Power Girl, two lines I had been following and enjoyed both. But hey why listen to fans when they can just do something stupid and have it blow up in their faces.

I mean if DC was so worried about the sexiness of their characters they could try looking at the internet or TV and see how they dress some of the ladies these days. To be honest Black Canary outfit and Zatana's (which I still love) are pretty tame by most standards. Yeah they're showing off a lot of leg, so what? SG has had costumes which usually cover mostly everything, the skimpist part her outfit is a short skirt SHOCKING!

I think the guys at DC should order their brains back and do what it takes to get readers, HAVE GOOD STORIES!

Well, this link debunks the idea that ALL heroine's are losing their sex appeal.

http://comicbookmovie.com/fansites/josh ... s/?a=39109

Supergirl is losing the skirt, but is getting thigh high boots and keeping the bare legs. In addition, Superman is getting what in my opinion is a LONG waited redesign. Nothing huge or earth shattering, just a good way to FINALLY lose the red underwear. Superboy's new outfit looks tight, too.

Seriously, what the hell is DC doing?

I'm really hoping this experiment ends in a year or so and they go back to the original designs. All the designs I have been seeing are terrible..the new Wonder Girl design is atrocious.

All the DC characters are beginning to look like second rate Image characters...oh wait...isn't Jim Lee doing these designs?

http://www.comicsalliance.com/2011/06/0 ... e-sighted/

So what if its not practical to wear a tiny suit or skirt as a crimefighter. Its a a comic DC!! Its not real!

At least there's some consolation to be found in this. We get to see more of Supergirl's thighs? Good.

I can't say that's a fair exchange for ruining the sex appeal of every other single heroine in the DCU, but at least it's something.

So what if its not practical to wear a tiny suit or skirt as a crimefighter. Its a a comic DC!! Its not real!
I don't think they're ever concerned about trying to make things "real" in any way. Everything I've seen so far suggests that they're still trying to do "Darker and Edgier". If I had a time machine, I would (among other things) go back and show Frank Miller and Alan Moore what they were unleashing upon the world: a hundred million Watchmen and Dark Knight copycats who don't understand that those works were effective not because of tone or attitude, but because of decent writing. Feh.

It's prob'ly a good thing I don't have a time machine. I'd screw things up properly, trying to tweak history.

I'm happy to know that Wunder Woman won't be changing her costume, at least. :D

Bye bye Power Girl! You know her current incarnation is not going to survive this stupid new direction.

Have you guys seen Zatanna's new costume? She no longer has fishnets over her legs; she has them over arms.

I have already cancelled my pull list and will no longer read another DC Comic until this crap is over with.

The funny thing is that it is practical to wear a skirt while fighting crime. Throughout human history, the majority of civilizations have worn short skirted outfits to fight in wars, conduct gladiatorial combat, etc. Plenty of athletic events are competed in wearing short skirts as well. They are very maneuverable and are much more practical than tight pants. Its that skirts "offend prudes who might see too much." Skirts are practical, that argument doesn't work. Now capes, cowls, skin tight costumes (like the males wear) are all very impractical. Try fighting in them. If practicality is where DC wanted to go, capes and cowls should be the first to go.

Some good news is that DC made a quick change to Supergirl's costume and her legs are now visible. This has to be a change because of online reaction to their sexist/gender double standard pants mandate. So congrats to us on one tiny victory. I'm thinking supporting the Supergirl "legs showing" title, while ditching the rest might be a good way to get some of the other characters changed back. DC realizes the pants thing was a mistake and Zatanna and Black Canary will probably get their looks back soon enough. Also, Supergirl's new costume has a few minor problems, but with a few adjustments and a red skirt added, it would be close to the most popular version of her costume.

I'm thinking this situation might be salvageable. Our anger got DC to save Supergirl from their hypocrisy. I'd say the best bet is to give that title support, leave the characters who were forced into pants on the shelf, and doing what we've been doing. We got one small victory so far and I think we might be able to get the skirt and some of the characters looks back. I'm hoping, and at least more optimistic than I was the past few weeks.

For those who care, you may have heard that Barbara Gordon will once again be Batgirl after this relaunch. DC has specified that they are not retconning her. The Killing Joke still happened, Barbara was still Oracle. But now she is rehabilitated apparently. Just thought you guys would like to know. I'm no interested about how they are approaching other story elements. The sex appeal thing is still a problem. But I thought some people would care that Barbara's past still happened. This is important to many, since her years as Oracle have been a staple in the DCU for a while now.

Destro187,

Even though our tastes are different, I still feel your pain brother. I am so into the high cut look, be it panties or bikinis, but my better half will have none of it. Sometimes I try to pull up the sides of her panties whenever we mess around and immediately she reaches down with one hand and pushes them down.

I hate how women are so enslaved to current fashion trends. Men are too but women mostly which sucks.

On another note, it's great that Barbara Gordon's Oracle has not been retconned. I love that character and it brought so much more dimension to her. I'm still pretty pissed about everything though and DC Comics will not get a cent from me when it comes to their books. I have already canceled my pull list.

Pretty pissed about Superman's costume redesign as well. Sure, if you think about it too much, it is pretty silly to wear your underwear over your trousers, but isn't it more silly to have a universe full of super powered beings that all want to do good? Why fix something that has worked for 73 years? Why fuck with tradition?

I was super-hyped about the new Superman movie, but I guarantee you they will use the new and "improved" costume for the movie. Horseshit!!!

*EDIT*
That is of course if the Superman movie is still a go with the abomination that was Green Latern. What a major fail.

I thought Green Lantern was pretty decent. Maybe because Marvel's done everything, the effects/storyline/action in GL just seemed unoriginal.

So the wheelchair bound Oracle is gone for good? That sucks...I read there's a great deal of paraplegic girls who really look up to her. On the other hand it hurts to see cute Barbara being paralysed, so I guess it's still a good thing...I dunno...

DC will be losing the rights to the traditional Superman design (as well as Lois Lane and other elements of the mythos) in 2013.

Edit: Per the second URL, below, it seems the Superman ruling may not have been issued yet but the judge has made clear that a ruling will favor the estates of Superman's creators.

I suspect that all of the changes being made now ultimately stem from the fact that they're being forced to change Superman. Some of it may be preventative, if there exist others characters which might be similarly at risk.

Forgive my silly question but what then becomes of the traditional costumes? We'll never see them again because of a stupid ruling?Or are their owners allowed to produce comics of their own?

Unless they sell their interest in the character back to DC (or the ruling is overturned?), one would assume that Superman at DC can never in the future revert to his old, familiar self. I speculated in another thread that DC is changing their entire continuity in order to obscure in some way the drastic changes to Superman, their core character. They might then be able to revert various changes, if those prove unpopular, while keeping things like the new Superman because they have no choice.

I would assume that DC retains rights to reprints of old material featuring the still current design. No new movies, TV projects, comics, featuring the old version. I'm personally wondering about things like collectibles. Will DC, for instance, be able to produce action figures representing Superman in his old design, or will that be off the table? Perhaps values for current Superman toys will rise sharply if no new representations of the classic design can be marketed.

Could the estates of Seigel and Schuster create new, competing Superman product featuring the classic design? That is an interesting question. They would have only a handful of the traits we associate with the character. Could they use the name? Hmm. One would assume the heirs hope or intend to profit from the lawsuit somehow.
