Actually, it's interesting that you mention this, because I was looking for an episode of Batman on YouTube, "Hizzoner The Penguin" and it looks like ALL the Batman episodes have been removed. There were a LOT of episodes posted by multiple users and it looks like Warner Brothers had most of them taken down. Luckily the show is on TV every Saturday and I have it DVR'ed. But I wonder if this is a sign that WB might be planning a Batman series DVD release after all!

I am willing to bet that is exactly what is going to happen! I was thinking that myself as I read your post.

I think this is happening now because they are preparing for the release of the series on DVD, later this year. They want to cut off alternate sources for viewing the show, to increase demand for the product when it comes out. I wouldn't be surprised if they're finally cracking down on the availability of bootleg DVDs right now, as well.

If you can afford the eventual formal DVD release of the show when it comes out, maybe this isn't necessarily bad news. As long as this presumed crackdown doesn't end up extending to fan art or porn parody or SHIB fetish materials relating to the characters. DC-Warner generally seem tolerant of such things, but if they're going to start being more restrictive it seems like this would be the time for them to do so.

(And, umm. I didn't read the post above mine carefully. The point I make is already implied before I make it. Ah well. )

Your post is good! I was thinking, hmm, maybe I should do a little research on this and I found this little article...

http://www.movieweb.com/news/batman-196 ... ed-in-2014

So apparently this all makes sense.

One thing I would like to know is if they plan on restoring the video at all for this release.

A funny comment from the comments section on this article...

"Hey, wanna buy some dead tech?"
"Umm...Nope."

So I guess it's about time :)

I wonder if the original 35mm film elements still exist to produce High Definition masters? Wonder Woman and Star Trek have both been restored, so Batman would be a relatively easy restoration if the elements exist and have been kept in good condition.

After all, the the main visual effect was the superimposed "POW!" captions on the early episodes. Apart from that, the vast majority of footage would be good to go.

If any of this is possible, would people prefer a reframed 16:9 version or a faithful 4:3 restoration?

Their cable/satellite version is called ME-TV, pretty much the same schedule, different ads.

They're asking these same questions at the 66batman.com forums, where several people at least claim to have access to various forms of inside knowledge about matters relating to the show. Even there, they don't seem to have definitive answers about a lot of things. Will the series be released on hi-def BluRay? They don't know. The claim has been made there that high-resolution scans of the original prints are being made, and there is some dispute about that claim. The example frame shown has a clear, crisp image with bright colors and deep contrasts, and it looks very different from what we're accustomed to seeing in syndication or on bootleg releases. We may end up being surprised by the look of the series, when the DVDs come out.

As far as the actual DVD release goes, I guess something could go wrong and snafu the whole project, but they do seem to be quite serious this time about releasing the material in 2014. This is not another fan rumor. Pretty cool. But we've had frustration and disappointment surrounding the show for so long that perhaps an "I'll believe it when I see it" attitude is not unwarranted.

I agree. I think the biggest hurdle, the rights and more importantly, the money issue, has been worked out. I just hope for THEIR sake, as well as ours, they are somehow able to market this at Comic Con. It would be a huge mistake if they missed that opportunity. The feedback from there would greatly enhance any future marketing and it would be a surefire hit for sales. ESPECIALLY if what you're saying is true about the new imagery.

There was a time, back in the late 80's, early 90's when WPIX in NY was broadcasting Batman episodes and I noticed that these particular copies of the episodes were much clearer and sharper in detail and color. Any episodes that I've seen since seem to be copied from copies, very dull and washed out.

Anyway, all good news if this finally comes to market.

Thanks for the headsup that BM66 is on the air on METV. Stupid titantv.com, I've been using them for TV listings cause it seemed decent and could have 6 hr grid on screen, but sometimes their listings are wrong and apparently they've got different shows listed in BM's time slot on METV. That's it then, I'm using tvguide for listings from now on!

I have a number of BM recorded from when it was on the HUB channel. But I didn't get them all.

I'm curious what the price is going to be on BM66 series. And will it be one all 3 season bundle, or will they release as separate seasons. Sometime 'later this year' we'll all find out.

Interesting story...

Years ago, I was looking to buy the old Batman shows on VHS (yes, it was that long ago), and they were not officially for sale. Somehow, I managed to find Yvonne Craig's e-mail address (she was selling real estate in California) and I asked her if she knew where I might be able to buy copies of the show. Much to my surprise, she responded to my e-mail and suggested I go to a con and ask around, because sometimes people sell them under the table. I never followed up on the videos, but I just thought it was nice of her to reply to my e-mail. :)

Anyway, Wonder Woman was released officially a while back, so why I wouldn't be totally shocked if Batman wasn't next.

Batman airs Saturday nights at 7pm(ET) on MeTV, which is a national retro TV network that's designed to air on a local station's subchannel. http://www.metvnetwork.com/ has the info you need, including-most importantly-if there's a MeTV affiliate where you live and how to get the channel if you are lucky enough to have it.

It's copyrighted material and they are planning a dvd release soon so they don't want you hurting their sales by giving it away for free. No matter where you go they will shut you down. If you find a site that won't comply with their request to remove the videos then you risk a lawsuit that you can't afford to fight.
