I like your videos WonderKenna, but the size of the video files is just ridiculous. I have a 40 minute video from you guys which is 2,4 GB. That's just excessive. Is there a way to reduce file size without losing quality?

Ok, I am letting Michael answer this on

No. File size is based on on kbps and the higher the the kpbs the sharper the video is, less artifacts and the less pixellated the picture. There is a way of encoding (used by people on pirate bay) that gets HD video quality at amazingly low bit rates but, when we tested the closest program out that could do that it was 9 hours in and only half way through a 7 minute video and took all of the computers processing power.

We found that, mysteriously, sometimes the videos look just as good at lower bit rates and sometimes they looked significantly degraded.

Our HD videos are rendered at 6000 kpbs. Any lower and we do see a gradual decline in quality. We do offer videos in a lower resolution 720x480 3000 kpbs WMV

Generally MP4 has a higher quality at a slightly lower bit rate (we offer mp4 HD), and we have played around with trying to do a 3000kpbs MP4 but then we are putting up 4 versions of the same video so, that is something to consider.

We are actually looking to outsource our longer videos to be compressed after the final edit. It is really a matter of time/cost and a reliable company

Thanks for that extensive explanation. I just noticed that, compared to other studios, your files are always bigger in size but to my screen (1280x800) it all looks the same. I'm guessing that it's more visible when projected on higher resolutions.

We were talking and Michael uses a 21" 1080p HD television for a monitor. We are testing some smaller files on a Normal HD monitor. It looks like we can provide an MP4 at the same resolution at half the file size with only the slightest reduction in quality. Meaning not noticeable for most of the video except a few frames here and there where there is a slight "blockiness"

BTW, we have been swapping out our MP4 videos with our new "MP4 Optimum" format which is HALF the size of the original files and we don't note any real change is video quality. So the last 30 or so videos we have put up are reformatted and on the front page
