Actually no. The tax increases and Smoot/Hawley pushed unemployment into around 25% and prolonged the depression for 9 years. We were almost out of the 1929 recession. Unemployment went for 12% down to 8% then Smoot/Hawley wrecked market. And yes it was a progressive republican who passed that. It was the higher tax rates that prolonged the depression.

The period of late 40s to around the late 70s was a period of very little government intervention and little to no federal reserve activity. JFk actually lowered the top bracket and spurred more growth. We had far less government back then.

FDR was a strong progessive. Thats what we need. He empowered the middle-class. Smart Savy and had conviction. Im honestly asking seriosly i really am, what has trump done to suggest he is any of those things? Please not trying to be a smart ass im really asking.

Why are you comparing to FDR. You do know FDR also approved the execution of 13 Nazi spies without trial and interned thousands of Japanese.

Dude... nobody has any sympathy for Nazi's... you should know that. The Japanese interment camps are one of America's greatest shames, it's a good thing no president since has ever advocated anything similar...

Exactly. Remember we were not the world power at the time and the two powers murdered millions. Btw what did the other-side of ww2 do? The bloodiest war in human history and a turning point for the world? No country left with clean hands. I doubt Trump could ever see us through something like that. In fact hed end us.

Im comparing him to FDR because we need a strong progressive. No one is ever gonna perfect but we need that back. Fuck Obama and his false promise of change. Timid bastard. He changed nothing and nothing led to something.....WRONG

What would Hillary accomplish with LESS democrats in congress than the dems had from 2008-2012? I would have preferred her in office because with a republican congress nothing would get done. BTw what is "progressive" about Hillary? And why weren't those progressive things done when the dems had a super majority? if a tiny minority of repubs can block the dems from 2008-2012 then wouldn't a much larger majority of repubs block Hillary?

SNL, Colbert etc will have 4 years of ripe material to work with.

As Republicans will inform you in this past eight years, it isn't always about what the president will acomplish, sometimes it's about what you DON'T want them to accomplish. The three arms of the government are intended to be checks and balances of power to PREVENT a lot of changes so in THAT sense, it's done its job very well, now it's all full of republicans... all of it. If the government starts accomplishing things like, giant walls between ourselves and one of our best trading partners that WE WILL ABSOLUTELY have to pay for, or interment camps for Arabs, or pissing off other countries, we don't NEED those sorts of accomplishments.

I actually don't think he's going to do much of anything that he said - I mean, the guy was pro-choice as recently as a couple years ago - but hey, I could be wrong. It will be interesting (and crucial) to see. If he actually turns out to be the mild centrist that politically he always has been (until the campaign began), things might not be as bad as they seem right now. I would say don't panic. Yet.

America's scientific community is going to suffer a huge brain drain to other countries, now that public policy is going to be decided by a bunch of climate change deniers, young Earth creationists, conversion therapy advocates, anti-vaxxers and stem cell research oppressors.

Get ready for the new Dark Age. Trump's America won't be winning any Nobel Prizes when the Luddite in Chief's favored 'scientists' are the crackpots who can only get their climate change denial papers published in the crappiest journals alongside papers on such credible fields as psychic cancer 'healing' and canine astrology. China's smog is certainly down to industry. And even they've signed the Paris Accord. Which Trump wants to rip up.

On the subject of industry, American manufacturing has actually grown over the last twenty years. Job losses are largely down to automation. The only way to reverse that is to go Full Luddite and smash the machines. Which will result in America producing overpriced goods for the domestic market (because nobody else will pay the premium) using archaic methods.

He's NOT going to. That's just a bunch of bullshit he spewed in order to get elected. Hillary may have been a pawn of the elite, but he's actually ONE OF THEM. He's not going to act against his own personal interests. The maintenance of the status quo in Washington supports those interests. Messing with a Republican lead congress in particular, does not.

What he likely will do is attempt to shift even more blame on to foreigners, immigrants, minorities, etc. if the improvement he promised doesn't pan out. This is what I am most worried about regarding a Trump presidency. What will he do if things go sour??? The results of this election may make Trump feel empowered to act aggressively in the area of scapegoating.

Not 'may' WILL. He's not smart enough or competent enough to run the office, that will cause it to churn out problems left and right, all the blame of which, his history proves, will be thrown out at minorities and immigrants and anyone but, you know, the idiot on the throne. Really. Many a republican? Not according to this link...

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_U ... ote_margin

When it comes to voting for President, I'm not crazy about my vote being but a small fraction (I'm in California) of effect on election vs the effect of someone who votes in Pennsylvania or other states. This because of the electoral college crap. If popular vote elected president, then all voters are equal.

And no, I don't care if you think it's a bit late to complain. I've complained before, just not here!

Well, there's no incentive for a ruling party to change the system that put them in power. A president voted in by a minority of the people is unlikely to push for a proportional representation system that would have put their opponent in power. It would take something like the drawn-out 2000 shitshow to make electoral reform a priority. But it didn't happen then.

The primaries are just bizarre. In most Western democracies, the nominee for each party is the person who rose through the ranks to the position of party leader. So you get nominees with a good track record of public service.

Again, there's no incentive for the beneficiary of the current system to change that.

Well... as I said, it's not that I wouldn't vote to remove the college if the bill came up... I would. It's just not the first time THIS has happened. So it's not like... we can just go and retroactively name hillary the winner when we've accepted the college for as long as we have... but I think I unnecessarily jumped down your throat about it last night. I didn't want the result we got on Tuesday either. (And you've got a lot more raw data there than I had... I just kind of assumed that with all our past presidents this certainly can't have been the FIRST time someone got the popular vote and didn't win.

California is the biggest fraction of the college... for what its worth. We're worth 55... Penn. is only worth 20.

Actually, I'm sure that Putin can trust him since they're buddies and Trump owes him now.
There very much seems to be two Donald Trumps - the Trump that is being denied something he wants and the Trump that gets what he wants. This will be problematic for several reasons. Number one, it's that questionable temperament that could get us into trouble with other nations. Russia of course won't be a problem as we're basically a satellite nation of theirs now but China could be when he goes to renegotiate trade deals and debt obligations. (By the way, more of the Russia connection is surfacing; did anyone see the quote from Putin advisor Segei Markov "maybe we helped elect him with the emails", confirming that the Russians hacked the DNC emails and passed them on to Wikileaks?)

I also agree with Mr. X's assessment that Trump is in reality a moderate. Already many of his campaign promises are being dismissed. He clearly has no interest in prosecuting Hillary Clinton. It's been stated there will be no mass deportations. How long before members of his really rabid base like the militia groups and the KKK start getting antsy? But in the end this won't be so much about Trump as the people around him. They're the ones who could make things really ugly for a lot of law-abiding but sadly non-white/straight/Christian American citizens.

And I fucking love it how Trump supporters are ripping the protesters when for months they indicated there would would be violent rebellion if Hillary won - and not just from regular citizens but from party leadership. Never mind the veiled and not so veiled assassination threats.

And for the people who say we have to respect the results of the election and "get behind the president" my response is, you mean get behind the president like Donald Trump got behind Barak Obama? By spending 8 years trying to de-legitimize his presidency? Then sure, I'm on board with that.

Technically, if you didn't vote for Trump (and voted for someone else) You aren't obligated to support him because you did not agree to let him lead you. You've only agreed to the system of government that allowed it to happen. So we are allowed to respect the office and NOT the man.

It's not like we're all down here plotting his assassination, but you can damn well bet since OVER half the country voted Hillary by the popular count, that means over half the country is allowed to be pissed off.

I love this sort of thing from a philosophical jurisprudential point of view. Did you agree to the system of government? Weren't you just born into it, forced to accept it for 18 (?) years without a say and then told that this is the game and you can play or not but you da,n sure don't get a choice in making the rules ? In this how is "you have to accept these things because of an accident of geography" a choice or inherently fair? (Obviously the real world does actually require some compromise with theory but from an academic theory point of view it's an interesting dichotomy)

All social contracts are logical fallacies. You cannot form a contract with someone against their will or knowledge. And there is no such thing as a special contract, or its not a contract.

Im probably going to shut this thread down soon. It was created to have some fun with the election. I just don't want it to be a distraction at this point. Besides, it's more fun to troll the people on CNN.com :)
