I want to be able import pictures of my wife and create Superheroine scenes of her and her friends - can I get by with the $69 version of poser or do I really need poser pro? Thanks!

Actual pictures?
Poser and Poser Pro is for rendering. If youre using actual photos, it sounds like you might need photoshop to make photomanipulations.

Well, I'd like to turn them into comic characters from their pictures more than just do photomanips so would love to hear suggestions on ways to do that. Thanks!

You could start with poser. Poser pro is 64 bit and for larger scenes. So you want to put pictures in the scene or create a 3d character? I think the cheaper poser is fine. Plus you could upgrade later for an upgrade price.
When I did photo stories I used to cut out the girls and put them on 3d backgrounds and sets. Your real expense will be the sets.
