Hey everyone, I am migrating my sites to a newer faster server. I don't have a lot of time to spend on this, mainly whenever I get a free moment. So there might be a point where I say , ok lets do it now and then I will shut down the site, migrate it and then re-open. If I do this, don't panic. I will throw up a message on the front page as well for those who haven't read this.

It should be a relatively painless process...Hopefully.

Are we gonna lose anything important?

Good luck. I've seen a few sites go dark for days because migrating to the new server caused problems.

We shouldn't lose anything. I am going to stop the forum so that the database is locked and then I am just going to do a simple copy from one server to the other. The software I am using makes sure that the two sites are mirrored and then gives the ok.

The old server will be in standby mode just in case.

This is true. Hopefully that will not be our case. I'm actually impressed with the improvements to the linux tools that handle the migration. It sure was a lot more painful years ago...

Good luck with the transition, but be ready for the unexpected. I am a firm believer in the saying, "Nothing is ever as easy as it is supposed to be". I also agree with the saying, "To err is human, but to really mess things up use a computer".

Ive begun migrations but I won't migrate this site until weds night/thursday night. Just an update.

So as of now, the other sites migrated successfully. Now I am testing to make sure the DNS can switch over with no issues. Of course there will be issues but if I can iron them out by tomorrow, then the forum will be dark from some point on Weds to Thursday morning. If it fails, we still have the original server intact.
I picked this date since it will be right before producers start advertising for the week...Either way I don't anticipate more than a day of downtime.

I had to resign in, but other than that I haven't noticed any different at all. Seems like all went well!

Hmm, seems I'm no longer receiving e-mail notifications when I get private messages.

Edit: the option is ticked in the forum control panel, maybe the problem is e-mail side.

I have been working on the email issue. THat should clear up soon...
