New Naked Gun Movie Coming in August

I just saw a trailer online for a 2025 remake of the classic "Naked Gun". It looks promising. Seth Macfarlane is producing. Liam Neeson plays the son of Leslie Nielson's character, which considering the age difference, is funny right there. I know there is probably a 100% chance it won't match the uproarious laughter and hilarity of the original slate of films, but it's awfully slim pickings these days at the theatre and I am looking forward to checking it out.

So much of the humor from back then won't be acceptable now.Just the opening credits scene would be pushing it.

I like the trailer where they showed the original cat, Dreblin and then Nordberg with the long silence.

If they're going to bill Pamela Anderson in the second starring spot, shouldn't they be showing her somewhere in the damn trailer?

Leslie Nielson was funny guy that went from serious actor to comedy. Liam can do "bit comedy" where he comes across as funny (like on SNL), but I am not sure he can carry an entire movie of slapstick. He was funny in the Ted movie, but it was a 30 second bit. Nielson was a genius at comedy and he could make what might otherwise come across as crass sound funny. I am not holding much hope for this one.

The OJ bit in the trailer should never have been there, they should just pretend the guy never existed. He doesn't deserve acknowledgement.

I will watch this one in the cinema, but my expectations are quite low.
I LOVE the 3 movies and the TV show a lot. If the new movie reaches only 20% of that quality... I would already be happy about it.

Same as,

I will give it a shot, who knows, maybe it is a fun ride, I doubt it will top the original, but in fairness it ain't easy.

+1

I will try to avoid the trailer, since I do not want to spoil myself unnessecarily. After all, I am quite sure I will watch the movie in the cinema anyway.

The Naked Gun movies are also fun to watch first time reaction videos to. Peoples reactions are often hilarious. :)

Its was niche TV level comedy. It won't work now. It was like a movie full of memes based on old 70s, 80s and 90s TV shows that we don't have anymore.

We lost the social zeitgeist of connection which makes things funny cause we all understand them cause we only had 3 networks.

I'm not holding my breath.

Is there a modern actor who can do deadpan humour as well as Adam West or Leslie Nielsen?

Well the Minecraft movie is doing OK so maybe there is a market for some slop out there.

Sorry for getting off the topic, but that one works easily for the same reason that Super Mario and Sonic the Hedgehog worked: it's a movie that kids and their parents both want to see. For those first two, the parents are old enough to remember the original video games. For Minecraft, it's just because Moms Like Jason Momoa. Works either way.

Naked Gun might not work as well, because the whole thing just depends on the star power of Leslie Nielsen, and also whether people are hungry for raunchy un-PC comedies because there hasn't been a good one for quite a while. It's obvious that Pamela Anderson has little star power left or they'd be showcasing her body prominently, oh well.

The original Naked Gun and Airplane movies worked because you had serious actors playing it straight in comic situations. What was going on around them was where the humor happened and you needed a movie to concentrate the viewers' attention on the screen to get it. The TV series failed because most of the audience wasn't watching the screen at home and they missed the visual humor.

For instance a shoot out between two men taking cover and then going from the individual close ups to a master shot to see they were less than six feet apart and the cover was useless.

Now the trailer only had two events, a look at the past members of Police Squad to set up the movie. Then there is a scene with Frank Dreblim Jr. that is much darker than anything in the original. There is some humor in the twist if what he was doing,

That is an interesting take. You are quite right, we don't have those shared experiences, shared frame of references like we used to, everything is so fragmented nowadays. I hadn't thought about that aspect before, but it is true. I still think folks can make funny and hilarious films in spite of that aspect. I won't go into the film with super high, insane expectations, perhaps that will put me in a good frame of mind to watch and enjoy the film.

I agree with both of you that the landscape is so different now.

Working in a cinema really drove that home for me, especially with showings like Downton Abbey. The crowd for that wasn’t just watching a movie, they were genuinely connecting afterward, hanging around to talk about it (I mean, yeah, it was Downton fuckin’ Abbey, but still).

But it was an exception, and as often they prove the rule.

But, as Bob said if you go in without expecting a masterpiece and just let it be silly or nostalgic, it might still land.

Sometimes low expectations lead to the best surprises.

In some ways, there may be hopes for tasteless, sexy humor. These things go in cycles. I think this will be a dog, but mostly because I don't think Neeson can carry a comedy. I think there is more hope for movies like Barbarella to be better. For better or worse, their is less pressure to be PC in a sex romp today than there was a couple of years ago. I may be wrong, but hopefully, there will be a more relaxed attitude about making a movie fun and there is a lot of comedic gold in sexual humor (and Sydney Sweeny's big beautiful titties will put bottoms in seats). I think this will fall flat, but others will succeed.

Liam Neeson was pretty funny playing a Protestant Police Inspector interviewing a group of Catholic school girls in Northern Ireland In a Derry Girls episode. If he did the same deadpan performance in a naked gun situation I think it could work well.

Just one example: who knew Tom Cruise could be funny before Tropic Thunder?

He wasn't deadpanning, though, more like turning it up to 11.

Arnold Schwarzenegger has made a career out of deadpan humor.

Please don't judge, LOL! I was watching an episode of Highway to Heaven last week, Leslie Nielson was the villainous, evil rich guy given a second chance to right his wrongs. Just playing it deadpan straight, he was friggin hilarious as the incorrigible prototypical, cliched evil rich guy before he saw the light.

I don't care about Nielson. I care that it will be the same dead jokes like in the preview... oh the masculine man is dressed like a girl and exposing his crotch. I'm sure the boomers will laugh.

Now kudos to them doing that Noidburg gag with the black son.

My view is this won't be risque like Blazing Saddles. It'll just be some slop maybe slightly better than McGrubber.

Let’s hope for the best and stress about the rest.

Good ol’ Liam probably won’t top Leslie Nielsen’s performance, and honestly, it’d be hard to, for anyone.

As long as they can pull off a decent homage, I'm game.

Still, I’ve got a feeling it’ll turn out better than The Marvels. :hq:

Liam Neeson has a very funny cameo in Derry Girls, but it's just a cameo. He knows what he's about.

The thing I would add though about Leslie Nielson is that he didn't really move to comedy, by which I mean he is at his imperious best when he is playing everything seriously.

When he fails, and he did from time to time, it's when the director tries to make him do funny, rather than straight.

I saw the Naked Gun film today. It was great. As I said previously, I tempered my expectations, didn't expect it to even rival the original, and it didn't, but the reboot film surpassed my modest expectations, the laughs and jokes coming at me left and right. Who knew Pamela Anderson actually had acting chops? My refrain has recently been "they don't make movies like they used to". Well, somebody remembered how to make a solid comedy after all. I recommend the film, it was good old fashioned fun, I was surprised how much I actually laughed out loud.

I saw it today. I got a few chuckles. I saw McFarlane had something to do with it.
