I read the book Gone with the Wind and saw the film for the first time about 10 years ago. One thing that particularly impressed me about the film was de Havilland's performance. I felt the quiet dignity and strength that de Havilland brought to the role was quite compelling, that she really seemed to imbue her role as Melanie with a quiet strength and conviction and I felt noticeably improved on her version of the role compared to her literary counterpart. Her character seemed to come to life more on screen than it did on the printed page. Conversely though, I thought the literary version of Ashley was a much more rounded and a lot more compelling and strong character than the milquetoast, feeble version we saw on screen in the film.
