Power Loss

Post by Damselbinder »

Hello there, all and sundry. I've got a sort of two-part question here. Firstly, what do people think of scenarios where a heroine's powers are drained from them - not just suppressed with kryptonite or what have you, but permanently robbed from them? Is it titillating, or does it just defeat the whole point of having superheroines in peril?

Secondly, can anyone think of any examples of that sort of thing from the SHIP world?

Damselbinder has a great example from that in one of his Enhancegirl stories. She goes up against a villain who only wants to get more power so she dominates the superheroines and she takes their powers, leaving the heroines powerless and defeated.

It's a pretty cool story. It's Enhancegirl chapter 9, but there's quite a bit of backstory to the character which is great to read regardless

I like power loss scenarios. Powers are often the most valuable thing a heroine has so stripping them from them allows for some great peril as the heroine would fight like mad to hang onto them. They’d also feel overconfident that, trapped though they may be, their powers will eventually allow them a chance to exploit a window to escape. But taking them from the heroine subverts that expectation of theirs completely.

It’s also nice if the heroine’s power loss is tied to her sexual awakening. Kind of primal probably going back to the Garden of Eden with the loss of innocence. But very hot to see a heroine cum and lose their powers in the process.

And once powerless, for me anyway, the heroine hasn’t lost her allure. She is simply now a hot girl who is easier to tie down and will always feel shame for losing her special abilities. ;)

But that’s my fifty cents.

I'm a huge fan of superheroine power loss but reeeaaallly don't like permanent power loss scenarios. Gold kryptonite is an interesting concept but it kills all the excitement for me to think of Supergirl or Superman rendered powerless for the rest of their lives. That's their allure so the prospect of that happening is not for me. I think the editors of DC Comics agreed when they shifted the concept of gold k. They made it a 24 hour loss, not permanent.

Primal did Power draining with their American Avenger vids with Callie Calypso. She would be overpowered by electrocution or the cloth and then there was a device used on her which sucked her life force or some such. And talking of Calis, Cali Logan did one with Amazing Girl, iirc.

Yeah, I think it can be a pretty cool peril and can definitely generate some titillating scenes. I think so long as the mechanism of the power loss is pretty provocative - a switch that just turns the heroine's powers off would be really lame. If the process were stretched out a touch, and if there was some kind of sexual slant to the way the power is taken, then I'd be well on board with that. I kind of agree with Dr Dom that the heroine might lose a lot of appeal if you keep going with the story after she has lost all her power - I imagine the temptation would be to end the story with the power loss in most cases - but then again it gives you the chance to have an interesting look at the heroine trying to get by without their power as they try to take it back. That could actually be an awesome story.

Personally, I actively dislike heroines who treat their powers as a crutch, and are otherwise totally unremarkable if you take their power away, defaulting straight to a helpless victim mentality. So as long as that is avoided, it could be fun to see the formidable character of the heroine having to adjust to losing their edge. You could even go deeper and examine how much they really want their power, or if the appeal of a 'normal' life has any attraction to them. But yeah, I think their character and skill ought to resonate as being heroineish, with our without a super power.

Off the top of my head I can't think of any concrete examples from elsewhere, but I'm pretty confident there must be loads. There's certainly lots of WW losing her belt and SG being kryptonited, but either way ending as a slave or as being dead are similar plot moves that rob the heroine of future agency, and there's lots of that.

Hi Damselbinder,

I think Centurion's latest Fuchsia Fox adventure story "Assault on the Castle" made a fabulous example to show how to defeat a superheroine through the way that inhibit/drain her superpower during the battle.

Hope you like it.

Hello!

A superheroine temporary without her powers is a fantasy of mine.

I'm not to much into something like kryptonite for Supergirl, weakens to much the heroine. I prefer, for example, Wonder Woman without her belt.
I'm into a fair fight hand to hand, body to body, heroine vs villainess. I love when the heroine with her normal body is weaker than the villainess and is beaten, humiliated. Something like "without your powers you are nothing, you are only a weak little girl" should be great. The stronger bad girl can also sexually harassing the good one. It will be very humiliating.

I don't have an answer for the second question but the scenario is quite cool. It makes several sequel ideas possible. For example a de-powered heroine trying to win her powers back by attacking the villain who stole them or by a "quest" to discover the way to recover (if said powers are not something that the stealer can give back).

I like seeing a superheroine lose her powers. It is part of peril. She is now hopeless without a chance of victory. She is in much greater peril than she was with her powers. It adds a psychological factor. Her life completely changes after losing her powers. She just an ordinary person.

Here are examples from Primal Fetish of superheroines losing their powers.

Christina Carter did something like this, too. With both Wonder Woman and Supergirl trapped in a cage and their powers removed. It was awesome. :)
