This might not be a new discussion, but over the last months I stumbled upon more and more damn borders in the Internet.
The CW TV site:
"Due to licensing restrictions this content is only available in the U.S."
The new Batwoman TV show is a good example for this.
Every US citizen can watch it on the CW on sundays. Every US citizen can stream the new episode (and all others) one day after that.
It seems that Canadians can watch it on their TV already as well.
Well, I don't live in Canada or in the US. Why the hell is there no ("official") way for me to watch the show now?
I don't know about these "licensing restrictions", but why can't people all over the world use that streaming service?
It would be ok, if there would be german ADs... in my case. I would use it, they could earn money with me watching it. But nooooo....they don't seem to want that.
I would even pay to use that streaming service! Not an option!
I would buy the single episodes on Amazon or someplace else...but no, not possible!
All these options don't exist for me. Why?
It seems to be that this show is "reserved" for the new streaming service HBO Max which starts sometime next year.
But is that even coming to germany? And if yes...I guess several months/years later than in the US?
There are so many restrictions lately.
So what can I do? Wait for a german (often badly) synched version in a couple of months/half a year/ whenever? I would like the original version!
Or wait until the Blu-ray of season 1 comes out? Which would be in 10-12 months from now. I won't wait that long.....to watch it for the first time.
(And I will pre-order that as soon it is available)
Some more examples:
I might be interested in the DC universe streaming service:
"SORRY, THIS SERVICE IS ONLY AVAILABLE IN THE US. WE'LL ANNOUNCE WHEN IT IS AVAILABLE IN YOUR REGION."
I would like to order stuff @ the US WarnerBrothers Shop:
"This item ships to the USA and Canada."
I would like to order stuff @ at the shop of USSoccer, available countries in the selection:
"United States"
(And I had ordered stuff there in the past, it was possible to get it elsewhere)
-
In my logic .....if I sell or offer something....wouldn't I want to offer that to as many people as possible?
I don't get it.
Maybe you guys have some explanations?
Why are there so many new borders in the Internet???

At least for DVDs there were regional restrictions to deal with piracy and differences in the electrical grid frequencies on the players. However as a US viewer I've had the same sort of problems with DVDs only available in European region and not for sale in US region versions even years after announcements that they would be available.
I also spent weeks registering on Sky network, waiting to get the updated viewer downloaded because the original wouldn't work, and then what hadn't been mentioned at the start was that service wasn't available in the US even if I paid. The shows that I wanted to watch are still not available in the US on DVD.
I could understand that making physical copies to play in a region requires equipment, but now they do video on demand DVD production, digital downloads, and streaming. There isn't the old reasons not to make them available.
Considering China pirates and sells these programs, they are only hurting themselves.

it's called geoblocking, in some places it is under siege (i.e. in the EU it is being seen as a restriction on the market so being eroded)
In all likelihood however it is due to an agreement or anticipated agreement with a german distributor to give them exclusivity. CW will make more money on the syndication than supporting an online ad platform. Most TV channels (sports teams too) are advertisers who want to sell you to their advertisers via getting you to watch their shows so it all adds up.
If you're that fussed get a VPN and pretend to be a Yank.

There are many factors in this type of situation. First, companies may not want to pay or license a company to translate the episode in subtitles or dubtitles. My favorite anime as a teenager was not fully translated in English. Only the first three seasons were boardcasted in the states. Second, copyright laws differ in every country.
Third, some countries ban certain content due to the content's nature. The content may be illegal to show in certain countries. The best example of this is actually porn. Some countries have ban porn. A famous porn company such as Brazzers cannot sell their product to people in China. I'm sure they would to sell their porn in China because China has a huge market.
Fourth, this actually works the other way around as well. The United States do not receive every product from foreign countries. For example, we will never receive video game counsels from China. China has very lose copyright laws so I could easily make my version of a Nintendo Switch and sell it in China. However, I could not sell my version in America because I would be violating copyright laws.
