Neat! I’ve never seen her in anything but she’s very pretty. I hope they give her a good costume.

I wonder if they’ll dye her hair?

Beautiful girl. Same flaw as all the other Supergirl actresses though, poor sense of direction. They can never find their way to my bedroom

Honestly feel the same way, she's just missing "something" that both Melissa and Helen had. You never know though, many thought Gal Gadot couldn't pull off Wonder Woman and she did a great job, but yeah, overall not getting the SG vibe from her. Will wait and see how she looks in the costume first, hopefully she gets a decent one.

The dark/brunette hair could work for her alter-ego, then have her blonde as SG. It could work. But I'm more concerned about the costume. Gal Gadot's WW is already in some kind of skirt, so it would be a complete bummer if they decide that this SG should wear pants.

Did any of the kryptonian women in Man of Steel movie not wear pants? I guess I could look myself, but I don't remember any off hand.

Altho Sasha Calle's Supergirl could be from an alternate universe where all kryptonian women wear short skirts, or American flag bikinis!?

Looking forward to seeing her in costume! Seems like that is what most are waiting for here....
Don't know the actress so far, but that's not a bad thing.
I read that she was picked out of 400 they cast for the role and I like her reaction to the news.
I hope her part will be somewhat big, or at least bigger than just fly through the screen once or twice.

Hard to tell from stills if she's got an SG vibe or not. She's got a great figure and that's encouraging for when they put her in the costume. I think, unless they go completely counter to canon, they'll make her a blonde in the film. Non-blonde would be an issue for me and many others. Producers generally wouldn't take that kind of risk on a mainstream movie, me thinks. Anyway, looking forward to any leaked daily rushes or behind the scenes stuff as they begin to film.

If Supergirl isn't blonde, the vast majority of moviegoers will not even notice, much less care.
She's smoking hot and showing it off on Instagram -- let her be a sexy Latina Supergirl and consider it a gift to future cosplay and fetish development, whether she goes dirty blonde or not.
Let's not repeat the Jessica Alba bleaching.

I just hope her costume takes zero cues from Cavill-Superman or Benoist-Supergirl -- that hyper-patterned carbon-weave flex-armor look has had its day; it's time to try anything else. Preferably something that justifies bare legs :)

I disagree. For one thing the media will report on it as a 'thing', and given she's been a blonde since creation it will inevitably generate stories in the media, so people will be aware in the same way all non geeks know about Superman is he wears glasses as a civilian and black hair and a kiss-curl, and is weakened by Kryptonite. All anyone knows about SG is she's a blonde

Yes I fear there'll be some attempts at drumming up hysteria. A couple of anonymous idiots will post something a bit racist on twitter, and some disreputable journos will turn that into "NERD CULTURE RACISM SUPERGIRL BACKLASH??" or whatever.

Hopefully she can just be accepted for what she is and the discussion about her performance will be purely about what she brings to the role and hahahahahaha who am I fucking kidding

*sigh* I remember a very long time ago the new James Bond was announced. The name of the actor is Daniel Craig. "A blonde Bond?," the people cried, "No!!! That's not James Bond!" But then the man went on to being one of the best actors that have played the role.

Sasha will do just fine. I'm looking forward to her performance as The Girl of Steel.

Anne Hathaway, a romance and comic actress, wasn't expected o do well in the action part of Get Smart or Batman as Catwoman. They can do wonders with training if the actor wants to do it.

So she's an SG from an alternate Earth according to the video posted by Scribbler above. That gives license in my mind that she doesn't have to be blonde.

The unwashed masses know she's the girl version of Superman, and half of that is just from the name.

Movie nerd media and comic book nerd media have already dutifully reported that the source character Supergirl is blonde. Any mainstream media that bothers will surely retain that factoid because there's so little to report. From here, some nerds -- and yes, some white supremacist losers -- will thrash about it in comments sections and on YouTube.

But fear not, this is a superhero property, not Star Wars or even Star Trek. And it's DC, not Marvel. Canon and continuity are inconveniences that can be handwaved if the movie is entertaining, and will not save a turd no matter how slavish the details may be, because the Canon Corps is not a big enough part of the blockbuster audience to make it or break it. They give us easter eggs, they don't mold their movies around the details of our Precious.

And this is for at most a new secondary character and maybe just a glorified cameo in DC's continuity shredder movie. If she's hot and recognizably the girl version of Superman, good enough.

The big issue here, surely, is not whether the new Supergirl will be blonde, or whether she'll wear pants, put how they treat the character in relation to Superman. The Benoist tv show did the character a massive disservice by putting very little clear blue water between Supergirl and her cousin - - she was (to quote Dick Giordano) "Superman with boobs", the very criticism that had resulted in her being killed off in Crisis (1985.) They surrounded Kara with as many Superman tropes as they thought they could get away with, instead of trying to define her as having an identity separate to Superman. The big S shield on her chest should have been the only point of similarity between the two, but instead the Producers never seemed confident enough in the character to let her be anything other than just a photocopy of the Man of Steel.

We really don't know anything about how much she will feature in the Flash movie. Will she have a major role, or just be a cameo? Presumably they are introducing her as a preview with an eye to producing a full Supergirl movie, so there's every chance she will have minimal impact, perhaps just a teaser towards the end. That said, the Flash has the ability to travel to alternative realities, so perhaps the plot will take him to a world where Kal-El never arrived on Earth and Kara is there in his place.

Serious though, if she turns out to be a mild mannered reported for a great metropolitan newspaper who hides behind a pair of glasses and has a dead parent who was the judge that sentenced General Zod to the Phantom Zone, and whom she communicates with via a hologram artificial intelligence at her Fortress of Solitude... well, count me out. (Yeah, I'm looking at you Bertanti and co!!)

To do this right, aside from the her powers and the S shield, she needs to be a radical departure in character, setting, tone, and attitude, to the Man of Steel. Kara has been plagued all her life in comics with the (undeserved) tag of "Superman with boobs" - - the Benoist show did nothing but reinforce that image. It is about time DC tried to show the World who the real Kara Zor-El is!

Skeptical of this choice. Perhaps there was extra pressure in the DCU to cast a token Latina, once the Wonder Girl/Yara Flor show was nixed. This actress has two years of experience in only one role..."turning and looking."

Here is the perfect selection for Supergirl: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Isabel_May
She just came from a strenuous action film and has a proven track record in two TV shows.

As usual, we'll see what happens with this.

Not only that, but Paris Berelc who played Skylar Storm in Mighty Med and Lab Rats in a succession of tight costumes, would have been a great choice as Supergirl, graduating from the Disney teen superhero shows to the big time DCU. And she's even half Filipino.

Another great choice might have been Kira Kosarin, who played Phoebe on the Thundermans. She filled out her costume quite nicely
in that show, and could easily transition to a grown-up superheroine role.

Besides the three above, I could easily name a dozen more actresses in the 20-28 age range who have such experience.

But once again, we'll see what happens.

She is gorgeous. Pretty much all the superheroes and heroines were white bread perfection up until very recently. I think it fair that some of them are reimagined with more diversity. It’s much more important that she gets interesting things to do and be on screen. Although those pouty lips do scream “ballgag”.

Personally for me I would not mind them casting a Latina. I think if the character was more iconically defined, that there would be more folks that might have a problem reimagining the character with a different race. Some folks lost their shit when there was speculation that there might be a black James Bond, and I think the more attached one is to the history and idolatry of a certain character, the more resistant one might be to casting someone of a different race. I would make the case however that the last 6 years of the SuperGirl TV series, the quality of the show has been wildly uneven, and as a whole been mediocre at best, and it is in that vein that I say bring on the sexy Latina. Perhaps if the television series had lived up to it's hype and potential, there might be more pushback in changing SuperGirl's race. Plus, Dr. D made a good point, that this SuperGirl is apparently originating from an alternate universe, which further justifies the reimagining of SuperGirl from another ethnic background. Bottom line, if the actress is good, then it sounds like a good choice to me.

Bushwacker - not trying to cause a fuss here, but could you tell me please how long it would take to iconically define a character?
Supergirl was introduced over SIXTY YEARS ago, and except for the Cir-El version (who is a villainess anyway) she has looked pretty
much the same the entire time in every possible medium. Just want to understand what your definition of 'iconic' entails.

I've always been in two minds about totally colour-blind casting. On the one hand it seems obvious that it's a good thing: any actor can have a shot at giving a good performance in any role. And hell, they're play-acting, right? Why not? If I went into a theatre and saw a black Macbeth I wouldn't bat an eyelid.

But the thing is I guess it's not a good thing to deny the racial-identity of a particular character. I would feel very uncomfortable, for example, if they cast a white actress to play Storm. Storm is black - she was conceived as black, she's always BEEN black. And let's say, Peter Parker. Peter Parker was conceived as a nerdy white kid. I guess he should probably stay that way? But I can tell you right now I wouldn't feel as uncomfortable if they did cast a black Peter or a Latin Peter or an Asian Peter or whatever. Maybe that's because I'm aware that black cultural icons in Western culture are much fewer than white ones, and there's plenty more to choose from even if Peter is reimagined as black. Maybe as a white guy my experience of the world is such that I never really have to think about the importance of my racial identity - because I never get shit for it - so I don't value it, particularly? I don't know. I don't feel the same way about being Jewish - if they did a version of Shadowcat who wasn't Jewish, I think I probably would mind that. But then I wouldn't mind if they CAST a non-Jewish actor... so I don't know.

I don't think there's a good answer here. But since Supergirl is an alien - and unlike Superman I don't think being raised by simple Kansas farm folk is particularly inherent to her character; she's CULTURALLY Kryptonian as well as species-ly - surely there's more license here than in other cases to just cast whoever the fuck you want.

Oh, but Damselbinder, with all due respect, this isn't "totally colour-blind casting" at all.

Need I explain why, or can you figure it out yourself? I can present an entire argument, but I'm hoping that I don't have to.

You mistake my meaning. I was talking in general about colour-blind casting. I'm quite sure casting a Latin Supergirl was deliberate. I'm just in two minds about the general idea. Though, as I say, I think if it's ever a bad thing, this is probably not such a case given Supergirl's conceptual history.

Maybe blonde white Hollywood actresses will cry racial discrimination and make a case for how hard it's becoming for them to get work?

P.S. Bonus points for "species-ly". Love it!

Maybe blonde white Hollywood actresses will cry racial discrimination and make a case for how hard it's becoming for them to get work?

P.S. Bonus points for "species-ly". Love it!
I take it I'm being mocked again.

No dude, not even a little bit. Sheesh.

To my (admittedly ancient, I'm 56) eyes, the whole racial appropriation thing has gone too far. I'm mocking THAT, not you. Your post does a good job of laying out the current, angsty reality of being part of the dominant culture while trying to be open to more fairness.
