With Supergirl coming to an end, I was wondering when it was announced that there would be a live action Supergirl series was coming, what were you expecting and did the show live up to your expectations?

For me, I was not sure what to expect. I mean you can't do Supergirl without Superman so I thought they probably should do a Superman series first and then introduce her. Anyway, I thought it would make sense to have Kara/Supergirl live with the Kents in Smallville since they already raised an alien baby.

So my expectations were not high but I did love the show. If they had wanted to do Power girl they could since we have already met two Supergirl dopplegangers.

I am sorry to see it go.

Finally, I have always wanted to know how long as Clark Superman when Supergirl entered his life?

No. I knew there'd be no "fun" aspect to it.

After the failed WW pilot, and all the SJW crap going around, I was expecting the worst, story-wise and costume-wise, though hoping for the best. The costume turned out to be a pleasant surprise. Not exactly what I was hoping for, but close enough to what I thought was the "classic" SG look. The writing was acceptable at first then kinda dipped in quality every season until it became unwatchable for me midway in Season 4. Then came the costume change and that was it for me.

No expectations at the start and the pilot was good, but the quality declined through season 1. Every time I had some hope it crashed down.

Like my roommate at the time said about Star Trek The Next Generation, It was a good episode, but then they ruined it.I didn't't miss not watching it.

I thought we would get 4 or 5 fun introductory episodes of her finding her feet with her powers before getting in to a slightly more serious tone. We basically got one episode of that (epi 2) I thought at the time it was a mistake - they missed a chance to show her both developing her character and her personal relationships and having a bit of fun to win over a new audience. The plot reveal that her auntie was the villain in episode 5 was way too early in the series (at the time I was impressed that they had done something different but it left that series with nowhere to go)
In the publicity still I'd seen, Melissa looked a bit smug and arrogant so I wasn't initially looking forward to her as SG but she was great in the role and won me over.
But the writing was weak and patchy from the outset - the idea that she would keep pushing until he she had ripped the bow off the tanker was ludicrously crap and then the notion she would just leave others to clean up the mess she had created for a week was totally silly and unheroic. Her messing up a few missions would have been fine but just not like that. Making a crack 2ft from the ships bow wouldn't have ruptured any fuel tanks, it was just lazy and half assed.
So I sort of see-sawed between 'Oh dear this looks bad and she doesn't look the part' to ' oh this isn't bad, and Melissa is great, this could be good' back to 'no it's crap but Mel is really good as SG'
How strange are the ways of the gods ...........and how cruel.

I found the Supergirl scripts underwhelming. Modern superhero movies and TV shows are too fast for me.

I think my initial hopes were raised a bit when I heard the show was going to be on CBS, that the cast, the production value, the writing, plus the reintroduction of the Supergirl character, which thanks to her links to Superman and the fact that there was a Supergirl film in the 80's, in addition to the unspoken expectation that to be on broadcast network television on one of the big four networks a show had to get to a higher ratings threshold that the CW shows did not, I expected the show to be a cut above, a higher quality than those CW Arrowverse shows. What we got was a show that quality wise was in line with those CW Arrowverse shows, not noticeably better nor noticeably worse, and of course with those middling ratings and quality, it could not survive on CBS, so it was moved to the CW where from a writing, production quality, and ratings performance, it fit in better with that network and fellow Arrowverse shows. With that move from networks, I realistically lowered my hopes and expectations for how much I would enjoy the series.

The writing for this show is very strange to a point. It's like the writers have never read an issue of Supergirl. Nearly every character is different from their counterparts from the comics.

A YouTuber pointed out the issues about Supergirl's character. She is totally different from the comics. Supergirl doesn't try to follow Superman's footsteps in the comics. She doesn't even get along with him in some series. Supergirl is a lost character who lost everything.

Her speeches about "Hope" are extremely strange for her character. Supergirl from the comics doesn't have much hope or faith in humanity. She will throw a punch faster than Clark. She doesn't hold back as much as Superman.

Supergirl's feelings about the destruction of Kryptonian are anger and hatred. Those feelings led to her becoming a Red Lantern. Red Kryptonite unleashed her inner ambitions and emotions. Therefore, she was split into two people, Dark Supergirl and Supergirl. The heroine from this show has grief and sadness. The Red Kryptonite only made her slutty towards James in the club and evil for selfish reasons.

I strongly suspect that these Supergirl writers don't care about continuity issues with their fellow Arrowverse shows, so it would not surprise me in the least that they are totally ignorant of the comic book origins of Supergirl.

I was hoping for a college aged Kara, myself. When they went with the professional route, I was concerned. They were having her start too late to be a "girl" IMHO. Also, why Kara Dancers, and going with the lame glasses/ponytail disguise route? What happened to good old Linda Danvers with the brunette wig?
Also feels like they completely avoided any pre-Crisis stories. Kara had a rich history(25+ years!)to refer to for allies and foes!
As for being a hopeful character, Kara used to be a light-hearted character until they re-booted her in the 00's.
I was also hoping for more perils. I wasn't expecting a green K antagonist of the week like in Smallville, but there could have ben other kinds of perils.
And then costuming. I liked her outfit in the first season. Those thigh highs with black nylons just drew the eyes to Melissa's sweet legs. Then the show went to the CW, and it looks to me like they changed materials in Melissa's top. It just concealed her assets. And for the bodysuit? UGH! ICK! BLECH!
Shit material, and crappy detailing in it.

I'm just wondering how much behind the scenes affected what we got on the show. Between Melissa being abused by her ex, and apparent abuses by producers, I guess that stifled any perils for Supergirl on the screen.

My 2 cents.
Bert

There are two lenses through witch to view the show - conventional and SHIP.

Conventional - Melissa is great as Supergirl and a few cast members are okay, but the writing started out lazy and bad, and it got steadily worse. By season 4 the show was unwatchable. Uber-woke preaching, zero respect for character and dreadful action. The titular character is often sidelined. A complete mess.

SHIP - Initially, a bonanza. The pilot was like a dream come true. Supergirl fought a powerful foe twice, losing badly the first time and barely eking out a win the second. And it wasn't just that she faced peril, it was pretty juicy stuff.

She got stomped on the chest WITH an upskirt shot.

There was plenty more good peril content in season one, and some good stuff in season two as well. After the Reign fight in the middle of season three, everything changed. Now there is very purposely almost no peril at all. But at the beginning, it was just about perfect.

True. I think the show did cater to some other peoples' fetishes. Like the episode where she proudly stomps through a portal to a prison planet with a red sun and basically the episode becomes 50 shades of grey. Or the one where she lands on an island that diminishes super powers and they chain her up.
