Stargirl season 2 starts on August 10.
More of the lovely costume which Batgirl1969 loves so much on Brec (as do we). :)

The first reveal seems to be Jade aka Jennie Hayden, the daughter of Golden Age/Justice Society Green Lantern, Alan Scott,
and Rose Canton (the first Rose & Thorn).

This year's trend is to increase Asian representation so she's being played by cute Filipino-American actress Ysa Penarejo, who has
Emmy-nominated action/sci-fi experience in the Netflix show "Project MC2" about four girl science geniuses.

The costume in the trailer looks boring so let's hope there's ultimately more to her getup than that.

Maybe Jade's twin Obsidian (who was already played by two different actors in the brief Justice Society appearances in
Legends of Tomorrow) will eventually make an appearance as well?

It's a pretty good timing as my favorite show with masked women is about to end its second season this Sunday...Stargirl will be back and airs its second season ....until in October "my" show will be back.

Here is the season trailer:

-

I hope that Stargirl and Wildcat will encounter more secret identity peril in season 2. And that at some point at least someone tries to unmask them....and by that I mean: Reaching for their mask and try to pull it off (not some complicated scheme to discover their secret identity)
I hate when secret identities get busted over and over again and way too often by NOT just pulling the mask off.
Sometimes/often the simplest solution is the best ;)

A lot of cosplayers make fucking great costumes.

I can Gty our cosplays far exceed the quality of most TV or film heroine costumes, with exception to the new DC films Shazam, Justice League and Aquaman, Our Supergirl, Raven HQ, and WW totally exceed the expectations of fans and con attendees. Her costume mirrors the comic book and the action figure, it is almost as if Alex Ross painted the costume on her!!

So, Stargirl Season 2 started this week with Episode 1 "Summer School, Part 1."

And although I am happy to say this series continues to be lots of pure escapist fun (without any injected 'biases') unfortunately there's not a lot to report about Episode 1, it's so slow and so little happens that it's almost like you could skip it and not miss anything. Brec looks gorgeous and cute as usual, but she's only in the costume for a couple minutes right at the beginning. Wildcat actress Yvette Monreal is also very cute, but again, not much happens with her.

Instead of a lot of action, what we get is character development, with each young hero/heroine going through their own emotional arc (Rick Tyler / Hourman's being the weakest and least understandable of the four). Despite being supervised by Geoff Johns, the writing here seems very teenage-level like a typical non-superhero CW show - maybe that's the intention because they want to retain a younger viewing demographic.

We meet Jade as Green Lantern's daughter, but you already knew that from the trailer, and there is no costume yet (let's cross our fingers and hope there will be: Jade is hot in the comics). You also knew from last season's finale that Cindy would become Eclipso, and that thread doesn't really progress any further in Episode 1. Cindy doesn't transform yet, or wear any kind of costume. So, I would skip straight to Episode 2 unless you have the time. The best thing I can say is that it's really fun watching Brec onscreen.

For those who did watch it, I do have some questions about the writing though. It suddenly seems rather inconsistent, and not particularly well thought-out.
Spoiler

- Why would a teenager like Courtney be so overwhelmingly obsessive about being a superhero to the point of patrolling
when everything is deadly quiet? Wouldn't she have other interests? Like friends, boys, video games, movies, the internet?

- Rick goes looking for a creature in the forest...but where is there a forest in Nebraska? With hills, no less? I thought it was
all flat and fields of corn? I've looked at a few photos of the "Nebraska National Forest" and it's pretty sparse - it doesn't look
anything like the forests of British Columbia where this show is being shot.

- It also looks like Rick cheats on his final test..but how did he do that? Where did he suddenly get all the answers from? And if he
did indeed cheat, why was he stupid enough to get every question right, instead of getting a few wrong to throw the teacher off the scent? Rick's character just really seems like a dumb lunkhead - it's hard to care about him.

- If Pat is going on vacation for two weeks, why doesn't he LOCK the back room where the robot is?

- What is the real point of Yolanda's emotional breakdown in a church? Are they really going to follow up on that in terms of
dealing with her Catholicism, or including the priest in a future episode? If not, the scene seemed kind of pointless. She doesn't
even do a confession, which is what usually happens in a scene like that.

- I thought Courtney was a smart girl. Even if she did stay up til 4 am, why did she *fail* both History and English?
That just seems out of character for her. She seems like an achiever, not a slacker to the extent of getting a couple of Fs.

I missed almost the entire show when a friend called and from what you said I still watched too much.
Spoiler
Courtney really doesn't have a life since she came to town. Her sport, gymnastics, isn't done there. Her attempt at a boyfriend got killed off in season 1. Her only friends are the other teens she recruited for the new JSA. Her mother was a workaholic in season 1 working for the ISA.

The problem with Nebraska woods is they use the available locations in Canada and skip being realistic.I miss when shows used to film some on location or at least close to real life.

Spoiler
- Well, Courtney is really fully embracing her role as her destiny, I like her passion.
....and perhaps she is enjoying running around in that costume and mask ;)

- Yeah, he should have locked the door to the robot room. I saw that one coming.
But perhaps he is just too used to Blue Valley. I mean as they were running around in the town in episode 1 of season 1 everyone was greeting them on the street even they all didn't know these people. Perhaps they don't even lock their doors in such a town....

- Yolanda's breakdown in the church was well done...in my opinion. She can't talk to outsiders about her killing Brainwave. I mean she can hardly confess that she killed that villain. Even she is speaking to a priest....she would endanger herself and her secret identity as Wildcat.

- Well, Courtney stays up all night studying ISA profiles, she doesn't do anything for school. She spends all her time on trying to find more bad guys.
So...I am not surprised she fails in school in some cases.

In conclusion:
If you watching this just for the scenes with the costumed girls....you can totally skip it (this episode)....as Shevek would say.
If you are interested in the story as well.....you should watch it.

Great episode. Almost felt sorry for Cindy but she made the same mistake that others make. She actually thought that she was in control and that it was like Eclipso was like an evil genie with her being the master but he let her know that he was using her just as she was using him.
Spoiler
Loved Courtney going to try and save Cindy inspite of the things she has done.
Loved this episode.

Yes, I have, Maskripper.
I like how there are lot of weird-horror elements to the stories...it seems that the use of Eclipso as a villain really encourages that.

Cindy's full-on Shiv costume looks great (as does Brec's of course), but it does seem a little 'busy' like she is wearing a few too many accessories.
Spoiler
The scene where Eclipso materializes himself and then tortures and throatlifts Shiv, tosses her away like a ragdoll, and then she disappears into the bubbling miasma hole he created in the floor is probably one of the best peril sequences I've seen in the CW universe. The menace is palpable. Impressive, even if the lighting is rather dark.

I've enjoyed binge watching this to catch up. The various challenges and difficulties for each of our heroes have been interesting and the nuances of the villains both new and recurring have kept things fresh.

I am really looking forward to what comes next!

So that you don't reveal any major plot points to those who haven't watched the episode/movie yet, you place that information inside the "spoiler zone" (which the spoiler button creates) so only those who really want to see it will click on it.

Wow, that is awesome, Jinx! Congrats to Luna - seems like she's been getting steady parts in a bunch of network TV shows. She is gorgeous - somewhat close to Lucy Liu in appearance too, but even hotter.

It's great when we see our superheroine actresses succeed - our latest Arogya actress (whom you met at Big Apple Con) is also trying to break into the business, and she got parts so far in a movie on Amazon and a TV show on Netflix.

It's more like a teen angst drama where they cosplay for a few scenes.

It's a CW series. They're all basically "The OC" with occasional punching.

And slightly less Imogen Heap-backed gunplay.

Well, it's almost as if the villains and team Stargirl exist in their own world. The public doesn't seem to know anything about the villains or Stargirl and they never interact with each other. I mean Stargirl and Co don't fight normal crime at all, they "only" show up to fight the super villains.
It's quite weird.

In regards to the school, well.... it has some damage yeah. But that could have been some normal vandalism.
Don't know if the school has cameras, but they can have taken care of those and the footage.

The school should have increased security after Courtney wrecked all the sewing machines in the home economics class making her costume. Even with the ISA controlling the school someone else would have noticed.

You had no problem with writer Steve Harper making Eclipso into a blatant racial supremacist? Never existed in the comics. Beth had a reason for her insecurity and resentment already, for Eclipso to easily exploit. She really needed another reason? When you look up Harvard/Juilliard grad Steve Harper and the themes of his writing, it becomes clear why it was injected. I'm just surprised that Geoff Johns let something that heavy-handed slide, when there's been no indication of such thing before in Stargirl episodes. Maybe he just didn't notice.

I don't know the Stargirl comics, so....no, I have no problem with it.
On the contrary, I think it's good to have a racist villain in the TV show. Makes most people even hate him more.
I like it when racism is so out in the open....instead of the sneaky and hidden ways.
And it's a good thing when the folks really despise the bad guy in such a TV show.

Everytime they show us flashbacks of the previous JSA, they were jerks with the way they mistreated Pat. When Wildcat said that he was not part of the team, Pat should have left the room. And notice how Starman did not even defend Pat.

After settling into a mixture of campiness and horror in Season 1, the second season of this series is getting a bit tiresome. The fights or conflicts in this episode (as in the previous one) are not real - they are all waking nightmares - illusory scenarios mentally imposed by Eclipso. (And of course he can be racist, even though it's not indicated anywhere in Eclipso's extremely long and convoluted comics history - he manifests as a little blonde white boy. But I do think that was Steve Harper's injection, so you probably won't hear of it again).

Maskripper is right - there are no superheroines in this episode, and certainly none wearing masks. :)

If you watch Episode 9, you will do so because you want to see the dynamic of how the old Justice Society related to each other
and to Pat, and because you want to see the cameo of John Wesley Shipp as Flash (he is such a nice guy - met him twice, and saw his fun panel at MountaineerCon last weekend! I just can't say anything bad about him even if the appearance was just to keep the actor gainfully employed). Pat, by the way, is becoming quite a pathetic sad-sack, so I hope he has a good redemption arc.

I do note, however, that there was a pure "damsel in distress" scene involving Barbara Whitmore. She is trapped in peril which she perceives as lethal, and a male figure (with powers) essentially rescues her from it. It has a classic comic book trope to it. Amy Smart is attractive, and was downright hot in flicks like Varsity Blues and Butterly Effect, so it would be incredible if they put Barbara in a costume, even if Geoff Johns had to invent a brand-new superheroine to do it, but unfortunately I doubt that's going to happen, since Courtney's mom isn't even canon in the comics.

But back to the main point: there is nothing to see superheroine-related in this episode at all. Courtney only briefly uses the staff twice, but not in her costume. So unless you crave old JSA flashbacks, skip it.

That episode was to provide mostly background information about what Pat was hiding from Courtney. The other point was to see Eclipso go after Courtney's family as the next people to harm before the real confrontation between them.

Pat has the worst in the flashbacks as being referred to as the Driver and not a real JSA member. He's brought in for a vote where the decision was almost already made and his views are ignored. He's thee for exposition and to show how Eclipso will get to him.

Not really a great season for showing super heroines. This is more filler to set up a season 3.

Episode 11

....of "....girl" (aka Stargirl) was a good episode, despite the (repeated) absence of masked ladies:

And there is a light on the horizon! Only 2 episodes left, so the big battle with Eclipso is about to start.
That means that .....finally....Stargirl....will be in "Stargirl" again! :hmmm: :w00t:

Think we'll see Jennie in her Jade costume?

Great episode. Love how they all do what they can to regroup to take on Eclipso. Loved the shocker at the end with Jade and her vision of what is to happen. Eclipso has turned out to be a pretty good villian. He is smart and has planned his doings for a while to get to his endgame.

Looking forward to next week's finale.

Catching up on Stargirl....

EP11: Despite being in black-and-white this is a solid episode for heroine/villainess fans.

That young actor Milo Stein who plays young Eclipso is very talented at being creepy!
(We met him in Pittsburgh two years ago when he stopped by our table at 'Freaky Fair' and met our
superheroine, X-Machina - he has our first comic book issue!)

We see lot of Shiv in her full costume..and I do mean a LOT. Except for that annoying loincloth, it looks good.

There is a short but intense girl-on-girl battle.

Shiv is strapped to a table in peril for her dad's cruel experiments.
Dragon King has an epic line: "One final procedure, and you will become the Dragon Queen."

No costume for Brec, but she looks cute all the way through the episode in her shirt and tight jeans.
One of the best looks is the opening shot where she is unconscious with her curly blonde hair splayed out all over the floor.

EP12: Unless you really want to see Brec in yet another shirt-and-jeans outfit, you can skip this one and go straight to the big battle with Eclipso next week. The plot is all setup - needless to say, everyone's back plus Cindy.
