Top Wonder Woman comic book issues with her in peril

An earlier post inspired me to ask for some help in this matter. I was thinking back to my favorite comic book situations involving Wonder Woman in peril. A few that come to mind are:
1. Wonder Woman: Requiem (issue #1). She is beat up, torn up, and chained up. Incredibly hot stuff.
2. Guy Gardner: Warrior #20. Wonder Woman is restrained and beaten up. Hard.
3. Wonder Woman #19 (volume 2). Love the way George Perez draws WW, and love the way she is captured and chained up in this issue.
4. Wonder Woman #82-3 (volume 2). Loeb's cover for #83 is awesome, and nothing like seeing a helpless WW tied to a chair.
5. Wonder Woman #67 (volume 2). Incredible cover drawing of Wonder Woman with a chain around her neck and totally beaten. Would only have been hotter if she were like that in her Wonder Woman outfit instead of the rags. Tragically, the art inside absolutely stinks. (Seems as though the worst artists were given that title to draw; could only imagine how hot some of those issues would have been had Perez stayed on the title.)
6. Wonder Woman volume 3, issue #26. WW is soundly beaten by Genocide and then left hanging by her arm with her lasso taken from her.
Would love to hear any other suggestions for great Wonder Woman peril in comics.

The one of Wonder Woman being beaten up by the green monsters is from Guy Gardner: Warrior issue #20. I only wish a better artist had done the work (though the shot of Wonder Woman held up in the air is quite good).

Loads of Wonder Woman bondage can be found in the Golden Age run of her comics, reprinted in the hardcover Wonder Woman Archives and the softcover (same material) Wonder Woman Chronicles. The third volume of this series is arguably the best, presenting the origins of both Cheetah and Dr. Psycho. The first five volumes are better than the later ones.
Wonder Woman also faced a peak of bondage and peril scenarios during the 1970s, running from 1973 or so until about 1977. Some of the best issues from this period have been reprinted in Wonder Woman: The Twelve Labors.

This issue from my childhood had Wonder Woman facing an evil speedster. The peril and danger inside the comic are quite good, requiring Wonder Woman to "take the spear" or something to that effect. The cover though is the what sticks most with me. The mighty Amazon grimacing on the ground and the lasso unable to thwart her opponent.
Yeah there's even a chloroform scene in that issue but its just one panel silhouette of Mayfly getting it.

Really great pics. Never heard of that Requiem issue so I'll have to check it out. I still remember when that Genocide vs WW issue was released. It was shocking.
With the Requiem pics Sugarcoater are the rest of the frames like these? To me it looks like the artist couldn't draw her face as its either obscured or turned away in every pane (apart from one partial view)
I'm not having a go, I like them but the full body shot at the end where she is just a mass of hair makes her look like Cousin It. The story looks interesting and I'm thinking of tracking it down but not if she is always obscured or turned away in the peril.
Seeing the heroines face as she is tortured or beaten is all part of the money shot for me.
Thanks for posting them regardless, the style reminds me of some of the 2000AD ABC warriors stuff from early editions.

Love that last one knotty. I remember when that issue came out--couldn't wait for the next issue, then was totally let down. Terrible interior artwork! So disappointing.
As for the Artemis: Requiem issues, there are some fairly good head shots, but excellent point about the lack of facial expression/facial drawings. The posted panels are about the only ones that feature Wonder Woman in peril. Damn shame if you ask me. Would have loved to see more.

I remember that WW tied to a chair issue too where they said the chair she was on was powerful enough to hold superman and it looked like an aluminum kitchen chair. Sadly disappointed

The next issue was delayed, due to complaints by what I would consider 'feminists'. She was supposed to have been depowered through Aphordite's law where if a man bound her wrists she would loose her powers. It was punishment for her mother allowing herself and her people to be enslaved by Hercules.Mr. X wrote:I remember that WW tied to a chair issue too where they said the chair she was on was powerful enough to hold superman and it looked like an aluminum kitchen chair. Yeah Mr. X, a folding chair strong enough to hold her was a joke, and I think the writers were pissed at the interference to the story they were telling.
Yeah insane complaints. And Superman gets depowered ALL THE TIME. One kryptonite rock makes him a baby. How many times has Wonder Woman been turned into a monkey. Superman gets depowered, beaten to death, powers stolen, powers lost, body taken, mind taken over, screwed with by magic, humiliated by Myxisplyxious (sp?) but God forbid WW gets tied to a chair and loses her powers.ksire_99 wrote:The next issue was delayed, due to complaints by what I would consider 'feminists'. Honestly I think WW has faced her fair share of perils and been beaten to a pulp plenty of times in comics. Honestly comic book WW could be looked at as more of a bondage/peril queen than a super heroine with all the stuff she has gone through.

Wonder Woman, Superman and Batman have all been through some rough (and quirky) peril over the years. Heck, after so many years of comic book issues, it's difficult to come up with anything legitimately perilous or uniquely dangerous. The only issue, to echo one of the above points, is that no one is protesting the men being put into peril on par with Wonder Woman's peril. It's practically reverse-sexism. Weaken Superman all you want--even put him in a porno (which happened in a comic, though the "action" never took place because Superman snapped out of it in time), but you can't do the equivalent to Wonder Woman (though she can put men into bondage with her lasso all she wants).

I believe they said that the chain she was bound with was strong enough to hold Superman but readers quickly noticed that she was chained to an ordinary chair and if she broke that the chains would be lose enough to fall off.Mr. X wrote:I remember that WW tied to a chair issue too where they said the chair she was on was powerful enough to hold superman and it looked like an aluminum kitchen chair. Honestly I believe that's just a rumor amongst kinky fans who wanted more. This issue ended with that pin up page and no mention of any of that old WW folklore.. How would your angry feminists have know what the next issues story was going to be? And even if they did I seriously doubt they could have harassed DC enough in such a short time to make them change their story.ksire_99 wrote:

You believe what you want, the next issue was delayed for three weeks. So that works out to about 7-8 weeks between issues. That is plenty of time.
Why is it 'kinky' fans? The creator of WW made that her weakness! The belt was a made for TV thing.
If you look the chair between the two issues it was changed from wood to a flimsy metal chair.
Plenty of time for what? Rumors to spread? How did anyone know what the story was supposed to be? Comics are delayed all the time because an artist or writer couldn't finish on time. It happens regularly with out changes to the story.ksire_99 wrote:

Why is it kinky fans? Who else cares if she was still bound and gagged in the next issue? Everyone knows that the creator of WW as a bondage/fetish outlet in the early days.
Sure the chair changed. Do you think the feminist made them change the chair? What does that even mean or matter. The bondage also changed. She went from being tied and gagged to being chained and not gagged. Much more noticeable to me and yet if the changed it to appease the evil feminists they probably would have done away with the bondage all together, don't you think
Comics end with a splash page all the time only to pick up in the next issue with a lot of details changed. They do the same with covers and what actually shows up in side. I'm sorry but I'd be very shocked if their were any truth to the conspiracy theories in this case. I've never even heard a convincing enough argument to make me think about it.
As knotty as I wanna be! http://www.clips4sale.com/store/10033
Yeah I distinctly remembered the bad guy saying the chair was made to hold superman and she managed to budge/dislodge it.
I think the chair was kind of moot. Now I maybe guessing her but what may have happened was the art was already done and the original story called for depowerment through shackled wrists then the complaints happened and they had to explain how WW is being held in a chair with some ropes or chains or whatever.

No I think there were two points. 1) that the chair was stupid and made no sense 2) that the authors probably originally were going to have her tied to a chair DEPOWERED with the tied bracelet thing but were pressured by feminists to not let WW be depowered so instead they made up some nonsense about some chains and the chair being special. And all out of some irrational crying about WW being depowered when Superman gets depowered ALL THE TIME and by EVERYONE practically. When the Joker can chain him to a wall with kryptonite chains its silly to cry about depowerment.

Just to clarify something I saw earlier, the belt weakness was not "made for TV." It's actually in the Amazon mythos dating back to old Greek mythology. The belts were a gift, Hercules figured this out and removed it in order to win his battle with the Amazons after he got his ass handed to him a few times. That is when the Amazon's were "punished" with the wrists bound weakness, I believe the bracelets were worn as a way for them to remember what happens when their wrists are bound by a man. Could be wrong though, but WW's weaknesses are all viable things that were in Greek Mythos.
Almost right RM , in the Greek legends it's termed a 'girdle' rather than a belt, and would have covered the rib cage from boobs to hip, rather than actually sitting around the waist.RedMountain wrote:Just to clarify something I saw earlier, the belt weakness was not "made for TV." Got tweaked slightly to a belt so modern readers could relate to it.

Well I don't mind if they got rid of the belt thing. Fine. Its just that any character that has to be beaten down in submission kind of gets boring after a while. Even Hulk turned back to banner now and then. But then if one is using the character as a power trip character (again hulk) it makes sense that depowerment would suck for you.
So yeah maybe some girls want a female character that just comes in and beats everyone and has no flaws. Ok that's their power trip. But the publisher has to look at WHO is actually buying the comic and their bread and butter STILL seems to be men. Its pretty much WHO is the character focused to. I don't think us fetish people are in the majority so we're only going to get fun material in the adult sector which is fine by me. Let WW be whatever cause we know the fun one that we want.
