Her mask is her last protection. Inside her cowl or behind a mask the heroine can believe herself untouchable - it is a psychological protection - removing it not only threatens her identity being exposed and the potential threats to her and her family and friends, it destroys her self-image of invincibility. It is the final act which completes her defeat. I like an unmasking, but always prefer when it is left to the final act.

Re: unmaskings & faces...
In fetish videos, the unmasking is often done with no prior introduction to the secret identity. This kind of spoils it a little, as the villain is often clunkily required to tell us the name of the unmasked heroine.
I find it far more interesting if we've seen both the seemingly ordinary woman and the extraordinary superheroine. They talk differently. They move differently. As far as the world is concerned, they are different people.
Then, when the mask is ripped away, we get to see more than just an exposed face; we see the merging of two distinct personas. Barbara Gordon's head on Batgirl's body. Will the unmasked Batgirl become a humiliated librarian in a silly costume? Or will she remain defiant, thus revealing the Barbara Gordon persona to be the true mask?
For me, the ideal story structure for an unmasking goes like this:
1. Secret identity in her everyday setting encounters the villain. (This makes it more satisfying when the villain later recognizes her.)
2. A crime is committed and the villain gets away.
3. The secret identity finds a private spot to transform into her superheroine costume.
4. Superheroine tracks the villain back to his or her lair.
5. A fight scene with at least one attempted/failed/partial unmasking during the action.
6. The superheroine is rendered unconscious. The villain considers unmasking her right there, but chooses not to.
7. Superheroine awakens to find herself tied down with a camera pointed at her face. The villain announces she will be unmasked on live TV.
8. After some teasing and taunting, the mask is finally ripped away to reveal the heroine's secret identity. She is recognized immediately.
9. The humiliated heroine braces herself for the consequences...

I love unmasking scenes. I get frustrated sometimes because some producers do not play the beats of the unmasking scenes, in some films they just rip the mask off at the end with no preamble, almost as an afterthought. For some producers it seems that their heart isn't in the unmasking scenes, that they are just checking off boxes in sub-fetish categories.

Unmasking scenes are the best! While I agree with Heroine Addict for the most part (about seeing the alter-ego first), sometimes I like the idea that I too don't know who is behind the mask, and get the surprise of seeing her face for the first time when the villain does.
It'd be neat to see a story that featured several similar women and played it so that you don't know which one of them is the superheroine until the final unmasking.
