Amazon has done me dirty. My Synne City and Grimme City series were the backbone of my earnings. All of the books have maintained a rank around 200k since 2012. This month Amazon added 1 million to every book's rank. Forced them all into the sales dungeon, making it harder for readers to find.
It's their site, so they can do anything they want. I worry this is just the beginning due to the rise of the Alt-Right and their anti-porn stance.

Re: Hit hard
Yes this alt right crap is getting absurd. I have a few customers who can't access my site due to age verification laws. Texas and NC for example.

They've been steadily moving the red line of what they'll accept for so long. I had to pull basically everything but a handful of more romance themed books a few years ago, and the author forums I frequent have all been full of stories like yours, tons of little steps pushing everything but the most tamest stuff so far out of the spotlight it's almost like its not there.DonShip wrote: ↑1 year agoAmazon has done me dirty. And since Draft2Digital's purchase and full integration of Smashwords the one place taboo stuff works has been a huge mess. I know some people are still doing fine there, but the algorithm is a mess now, publishing through Draft2Digital is a HUGE pain in the ass compared to through Smashwords, D2D takes a bigger cut, and sales have just plummeted because there seems to be changes in their algorithm (even though they claim there isn't) that suppress older stuff. Again, I know SOME people seem to still be doing fine, but I've seen a ton of people who write tabboo stuff come to the same conclusion I did with Smaswhords (especially if their rent money didn't come from their writing): publishing ebooks as a main focus for their smut writing just doesn't work any more. I've seen a lot of people just quit over the last half a year or so, or do what I've done which is switch to a free publication model and hope to get money through Patreon/Subscribestar, and start looking at the writing as less of a job and more of a passion project.
I really hope you find a way to keep this being your day job (even if it's not, it SEEMS like it is, you run a professional looking ship!). And yeah, I'm worried about all the anti-porn laws and the stuff they say the want to pass as well. Especially having written a ton of stuff that's not heavily taboo and not 100% straight.

My Smashword incoming has dropped dramatically since D2D bought them out. I'm down to 1/3 my income from prior. Amazon income had dropped steadily as the same time as they continue to suppress my erotic content. Problem is for me, my erotic books sell ten times better than the non-erotic books.
I do have a Patreon page, but that covers about 1/3 of my rent. So yeah. Just trying to hang in there until SS checks kick in.
It sucks.

Re: Hit hard
It does. I wish I had more to say other than "I agree" but it SUCKS.
And places like this, topic specific forums where you can find people who appreciate the smut you're peddling, are so rare and have so few users compared to a decade ago. Social media gobbled everything up and destroyed the internet's old infrastructure and have left us with an almost unusable internet. I've got my cadre of longtime fans, but I'm no longer very good at finding NEW ones like I used to. It all just... sucks. And sometimes it's hard to keep at it, but I do cause I love it.

Re: Hit hard
I don't think most people in the US realize how easy it would be to wipe out/block most porn access they have. Most people aren't tech/internet savvy enough to do more than go to a well known website. Even if access to parts of the web aren't being blocked off the by government shutting specific sites down could have a HUGE impact on just how much/how easily stuff could be accessed.
I think smutty writing is even more vulnerable. Knock out a few big sites like Hentai Foundry, Literotica, and a few forums like this and anything even slightly taboo will get pretty hard to find, especially if somewhere like Smashwords ends up striping away it's existence (or just making it so hard to find it's like its not even there).

I bought some of Smashwords a while ago to support you, since I loved your Americana fanfics back in the day and still have scenes I love to revisit. It‘s a shame there‘s so much less fanfic now and that places to talk - the old SHIP board - have gone the way of the dodo. I really hate feeling so isolated in my „Delta City Heroines“ appreciation…DonShip wrote: ↑1 year agoAgreed. I can only continue because I love it so much.Philo Hunter wrote: ↑1 year agoIt does. Re: Hit hard
On the subject of porn restrictions, this is not just an issue in the US; obviously credit card companies can restrict global access if they can, and in Japan I have noticed the conservative government really cracking down on so much of their output. You can feel it in companies like Giga, which used to produce the benchmark of SHIP videos with action, violence, extreme sex, and really high production values. Now their products are so tame lately that they're basically producing tickle fetish compared to before.
Re: Hit hard
Oh I thought that was just them running out of steam. Their offerings are so boring lately. So sad Japan is losing. I haven't seen any naughty hentai videos in years from Japan. And Giga used to produce some fun videos. Another thing I noticed is the lack of busty or full figured girls.rizoredux wrote: ↑1 year agoOn the subject of porn restrictions, this is not just an issue in the US; obviously credit card companies can restrict global access if they can, and in Japan I have noticed the conservative government really cracking down on so much of their output. I live in Texas, and tried to go to PornHub... Blocked. Tried DangerBabeCentral. Blocked. Yet, I can still access Rule 34.
Why is it the Republlicans who are traditionally the party of keep government out of peoples lives the ones implementing all those dragonian restrictions? Now they represent "Keep the Goverenment out of Big Business's business, but outlaw all pleasure out of the masses' lives.
I'm generally not really a political person, but all these restrictions are turning me into a very angry voter.
Re: Hit hard
Surfnet is doing the blocking for DBC not Texas. The problem is Texas demands age verification which Surfnet does not have in place so they opt to block texas to avoid liability.DonShip wrote: ↑1 year agoI live in Texas, and tried to go to PornHub... It's potentially a mix between their porn restrictions I believe, and the head at Giga figuring some cost cutting techniques to maximize output while keeping things under the government restriction radar. From what I understand, they've cut the complex choreography needed in fighting (hence why you see repetitive action beats in single frame shots now like belly punching), removed a lot of practical effects like blood and bruising, and really tamed the sex. The lack of the busty models comes after the passing away of one of their most prolific and talented directors, who shot with so many statuesque models like Hana Haruna for example. He also loved domination style works with Wonder Woman as character. You see a lot less WW since he passed.Mr. X wrote: ↑1 year agoOh I thought that was just them running out of steam. Yeah it really seems like they are just going through the motions. Also they are flooding their IP with bland videos making it hard to sift through all of them especially with their lack of key word searches. I know other vendors who suffer from this. Would love to buy a video but when their catalog has hundreds of videos with small samples its pot luck.rizoredux wrote: ↑1 year ago

Yes Hana Haruna is great. I could watch a video of her just standing and being groped for 30 minutes.

I feel like this is a thing in general for most SHIP vids these days, it's either the same cookie cutter thing we've seen 1000x over at this point, or very toned down.rizoredux wrote: ↑1 year agoOn the subject of porn restrictions, this is not just an issue in the US; obviously credit card companies can restrict global access if they can, and in Japan I have noticed the conservative government really cracking down on so much of their output. So many of my favorite movies were by that guy, was genuinely sad to hear he passed. They are gathering new talent, I think they just brought on their first female director, but nothing has really scratched the itch in a unique way for a while.rizoredux wrote: ↑1 year agoIt's potentially a mix between their porn restrictions I believe, and the head at Giga figuring some cost cutting techniques to maximize output while keeping things under the government restriction radar. Re: Hit hard
This is why our Constitution keeps church and state separate. Whenever anyone has tried to legislate morality anywhere in the world, it always ended in an extremely oppressive government.
It's gotten to the point now where even high level officials are afraid to report crimes against maga-creeps for fear of retaliation against them and their families.
What they are doing is violating our Constitution, we must vote them out of office and prosecute the corrupt judges on the Supreme Court.
Our Constitution and system of law is failing to protect the citizens.
