The Penguin [TV show, 2024]

Has anyone watched the first episodes already?

https://www.imdb.com/title/tt15435876/

Trailer:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sfJG6IiA_s8
-

Looking forward to seeing more of it!
Especially from Sofia Falcone (verrrry nice outfits so far :-)) ....and the Penguin of course.

I guess the chances of any masked female character are rather slim to non-existent... but perhaps... just perhaps.
Very sure that Batman won't show up in the show as DC has problems with that since the 60s (Batman in TV shows).
But he surely was mentioned.

Watch THIS show!
Amongst the hundreds of ...mostly quickly forgotten... new TV shows... this stands out BIG TIME!
Great performances, very thrilling, fantastic writing!
And you get invested in characters who are nearly quite evil and/or even insane (Sophia)... more or less.

*You could say it's not a Superhero show (category-wise)... but it's placed in Gotham and Batman was mentioned ...so... I'll place it here

Yes, I watched the first episode a few days ago. I was going to start a thread but then I forgot to.

It was pretty good. Almost none of the characters are really 'sympathetic' per se, since they're mostly insane violent criminals. But you're right, you do get 'invested', which is more than I can say for a lot of other shows. It's hard to believe that is actually Colin Farrell. The man can act!

As far as Sofia Falcone, in the comics she is usually depicted as ugly, so this is a welcome change. The actress who plays her here, Cristina Milioti (what a great Italian name) is hotter than the actress who played her in 'Gotham'. It's rare to see a character get *more* sexy, rather than less, so I'm all for an insane girlboss as long as she is rivetingly hot.

So yes, this is a really good show. Better, overall, than the 'Gotham' TV series, I think. At least so far.
And yes, it should definitely be considered a 'superhero' show because it takes place in a universe where superheroes exist.

Will there be a Selina Kyle appearance in the cast? If so, you'll get your masked woman perhaps. If not, you probably won't, because overall this seems to be written as a Mafia crime drama.

I'll probably watch EP2 tonight if it's out. Lots of stuff out now I have to catch up on (including Joker 2 and Franchise).

I only watched the first one so far, and I really liked it too. I’m gonna wait until the finale before forming a proper opinion. Catch you in November...

Episode 2: “Inside Man” — September 29

Episode 3: “Bliss” — October 6

Episode 4: “Cent-Anni” — October 13

Episode 5: “Homecoming” — October 20

Episode 6: “Gold Summit” — October 27

Ah, come on, shevek, throw a bit more shade in your posts... Otherwise, it’s harder for me to sockpuppet properly. :hq:

Ha ha! Sorry, but I almost can't throw shade. I just watched the second episode and it's pretty much inter-Mafia hits and violence.
The main theme of the show is that you get to see how Oswald slowly makes his way up the crime ladder by alternating three personality modes: devious, murderous, and obsequious.

Much like The Sopranos, there's no 'forced diversity' here. The only new element they added that wasn't in the comics was that the Maroni matriarch is played by Shohreh Aghdashloo (the epic Chrisjen Avasarala in The Expanse!) and so about half of the Maroni family and their goons are actually Persian (the other half are Italian of course). To me, that's kind of cool, I mean I've never seen or heard of a Persian crime family before, and Shohreh is one of the most stately actresses ever.

I might very well go for Episode 3 later tonight!

Re: The Penguin [TV show, 2024]

It's been pretty good thus far. Colin Farrell continues his work from 'The Batman' of just BECOMING the Penguin and being basically unrecognizable as anything but the character he's playing... my only real gripe is we're doing YET ANOTHER Gotham series without Batman in it (or even being mentioned)... and it makes the least sense ever for him to not be in it considering that it takes place IMMEDIATELY following the end of the film. Of all the series in Gotham Batman hasn't been in... I think this one's the WIERDEST. It's as though we've fallen into a parallel world from The Batman where everything that happened in the movie happened, then immediately following that Batman ceased to have ever existed.

But the acting is great, the film making is great, the pacing and plot are great... It's just such a shame we can't get like... a Batman SHOW like this. They can clearly get the budget's for a half decent one by this point. Nothing about this show looks inauthentic or cheap.

Even just the END CREDITS are full of real quality and care for detail. There's a bit where it pans up a city block of rectangular apartment buildings, they pan to a point the details of the building are completely shrouded by shadows, then as it further pans up and the light reveals the details of the shape once more they are stacks of money....... It's a simple trick but one that really works.

I'm giving it a pass, I don't see the point in a Penguin show where he's just Tony Soprano and in a Batman universe without Batman.

Focussing on the sort of generic Mafia type criminals in a superhero setting seems completely daft. You've got a guy in the sewers who is an eight foot tall crocodile guy, why do I care about Paulie Walnuts?

Re: The Penguin [TV show, 2024]

Watched the final episode yesterday.
Yup, a great ending to a standout series! A great mixture between thriller, mob story, and character study.
And it's odd how you can somehow cheer for someone who is really wicked and twisted.
I mean the main protagonist has some sympathetic features... but still, he is insane and evil.

I never watched Dexter because I don't like the idea of a serial killer as the main protagonist.
I want that asshole to be stopped and not watch season after season and witness him killing all those people.
Perhaps I should give it a try... but with that many episodes... I think I won't start it.

Colin Farell, Christin Milioti and Deirdre O'Connell (Penguin's mum) are doing an awesome job.
And the ending... great job,
Spoiler
with two nice references to Selina Kyle and Batman
I hope there will be a second season... even this season would totally work on its own.
Colin Farell said some time ago that he wouldn't return for the role... but lately, he seems open to it... (#givemethebigbucks).

(...and this show has nothing much in common with the Sopranos except that there are mob bosses, but that's about it)

I'm pretty sure they stated outright that this series is setting up Penguin as the main villain of Batman 2... after which there might or might not be any space left for him to be in a season 2 at all. More probably 'if' they do another one of these, it will be to bridge the gap between Batman 2 and 3 and setting up whomever the villain there is gonna be.

Sorry to be off topic here, but I would encourage you to at least check out the first couple episodes of Dexter. It's not strictly what you think the show is about looking at the show from the outside. The later seasons are not as good.

I completely agree, this is by far the best show of the year. I’d also add that it made me rewatch "The Batman" with a new perspective.

Best binge I’ve had in a long time.
