This was a very interesting story, and good for Deltore.
But I have a question I hope somebody from Australia can maybe answer?
Back when I was talking with Eva from Superheroine Project, she told me she had to walk a fine line and be careful because porn is 'illegal' in Australia, and even the very light costume/fetish stuff she was filming might be considered over the line for that. Which was why she was hesitant to showcase at the Supernova Comicon in Sydney, but she did it anyway (in collaboration with us, for one year).
But the article linked above says that there is a "Sexpo" in Australia that Deltore attended, and she also says that she does solo and girl/girl which can somehow be considered "erotica" and yet boy/girl is considered pornography, which is illegal I assume.
Is that the actual boundary line? Only B/G is illegal in Australia? If so, that just seems so weird and random, especially given Australia's political correctness: lesbian sex is fine to film, but hetero sex is not? Australia seems to have a lot of goofy rules that border on the totalitarian.
Could someone clarify this for me? I 'm just curious what the actual porn laws are down there.

Yeah, the law in Australia is quite strange, and complicated. I think Ava was not completely correct but not completely wrong, maybe that happened to her, so she interpreted it that way? To be fair, even I have been practicing law in Australia for over 20 years, this is something even I have issue with.
First of all, the law is actually not a law, but is a classification system, in the US, you have MPAA which rated TV shows and movie, in Australia, we have OFLC (Office of Film and Literature Classification), not sure how things in the US work, but in Australia, anyone producing anything for public consumption would have to get rated by OFLC. As long as it's not internal video (like corporate training video) or private video (like vacation video) you need to submit your movie as part of OFLC rating procedure. Porn is no exception.
There are a few different classifications and the access condition
G-General
PG - Parental Guidance (Not recommended without Parental Guidance)
M - Mature (Not recommended for people under 15)
MA15 + - Restrict for people below the age of 15
R 18+ - Restrict for people below the age of 18
X 18+ Restricted for people aged 18+ and point of sales.
Porn is slotted into X 18+, where you can only buy them in specific place (like an adult book shop or sex toy shop or brothel, yes you can buy porn inside a legal brothel, whether you want to do that is up to you) And everything else is what they called RC - Refused Classification.
This is where the law come to, you are not allowed to produce material that you know it is going to be refused classification by OFLC. However, the issue here is, X 18+, the only category that Porn can slot into, is notoriously strict. Basically, it only allows sexually explicit material. So B/G sex is okay, as long as there is no other hanky-panky, there is a clause written that any "Abhorrent" and "Degenerate" material are excluded to any classification, so if such things exist in your video, regardless of category, it will go straight into RC pile. There was a case when a porn producer submits their porn to OFLC and was refused because the guy licks the woman private part, there were rumor that even Blowjob is excluded, and you can't get classification if your video has BJ in it.
But not all "Abhorrent" and "Degenerate" content were pornographic in nature, fetishism is deemed abhorrent by the OFLC and the Online Safety Act. Which mean fetish content are basically all RC, but the thing is, the definition of "Fetish" is not clearly state, so it basically is determined in a case-by-case status.
Basically, say if you take a picture of a woman wearing a pair of thigh high boots, if that picture is just a woman wearing a pair of boots, you can put it in a magazine and sell it or whatever. But if you take a picture of a woman caressing her feet wearing boots, that picture is going to be RC regardless of if the woman in question is dressed or nude or with any pornographic intention, because that's feet or boots fetishes, and that that is illegal, and you can be fine or sentence to jail if you are knowingly selling RC material.
Most superhero content is seen as a sort of fetish, unless you actually produce it like the mainstream superhero stuff, most of superhero content I see in the web will probably not pass the muster. And that probably is what Ava is facing.

P.S. Sexpo is also for sex worker, Australia is one of the few countries where prostitution and brothel is legal to operate, as long as you operate them in a safe manner and in designated zone. Sexpo is more toward catering sex worker than performer and they promote sexual health.
