As a superheroine in peril fan, I have to say I'm am totally dissapointed in the whole Supergirl series. It should be called Kara Danvers show for how little Supergirl shows up in her original costume. Plus what few peril and ko scenes that ever do happen, they never show the full ko scene and and maybe a little more skin without her cape covering lots of her. It seems they purposely make the ko scenes lame and never give a great "money" shot like the Lynda Carter Wonder Woman series always did, especially the first year. Hoping the Batwoman series is a little sexier with a lot more peril. Just waiting for a Wonder Woman series to finally show up after a successful movie. My two cents worth ... Luther
Supergirl the TV series was not made for sexual entertainment. KO scenes, skin, and peril are not the main themes of the show. Kara doesn't need to show her skin. She could show it, but it's not necessary.

Revealing costumes would take what little realism from the show. She would be exposing herself to many dangerous substances such as Kryptonite. Her second suit would not properly function if it showed any skin. It would fail at its purpose to protect her from Kryptonite.

Well, not really season 4 anymore, but as long season 5 isn't starting...it will do I guess.

I was always afraid this day would come, and it is official
Brace yourself for REALLY bad news and check this image that Melissa just posted:

I am sure that this will be really bad for the ratings!
Many guys just watch that show for Melissa in that sexy supergirl skirt wit pantyhose combo.
Now that suit (and hair over forehead?)
If the show will get a season 6 (which I predict it will not)....she might wear sneakers and a bun
....that would blend in perfect with the new "fashion"

Well, I hope for the best and will continue to watch, but.....it is a bummer.
The show will still have enough to offer for me.

Here's hoping that suit is only used occasionally and not her full-time replacement!

AAARRRGGGGHHHH!!

This costume makes sense for fighting. You don't want villains grabbing your skirt. This change may lead to more fight scenes and enhance the quality of fights. I'm sure the directors avoided certain angles due to views up her skirt.

I don't like her bangs. They make her look older.

Awww man, I love Kara/SG's hair as it was, I hope this isnt a permanent look. And, as for the suit - while I am a catsuit kinda guy SG's skirt and boots are so iconic, it would be a shame to change them now. I hope this is only a "need" specific option they are going with for the costume, I can tolerate that, but, the hair!!? I've no idea what they were thinking, and yeah, I think that style makes her look older ...

Melissa likes it for more mobility.

Now if she could balance it out with short skirts for her other identity.

I've heard via DCTVshow site that the reason they've gone to the new costume is because they film in Vancouver and Melissa was constantly freezing during shoots. I can understand the reasoning behind it but it's a total misstep for this loyal viewer.

I'm not even going to try to ask why your think the costume will end up getting the show bad ratings and that you predict that the show will not get season 6...
Tha is one of the most stupidest I have read in a long time...
Support the damn show...no matter what style costume Mel wears...I can't believe some of you people in this forum and social media... No wonder I avoid this forum so much...I mean...this is so stupid...

I agree with geekporncritic...Supergirl the TV series was not made for sexual entertainment.
You have to deal with it and stop predicting its doom. I'm I crazy about this new look...Not exactly..but i don't dislike or hate it either.....Let's see how it goes...who knows..if the show get a lot of negative feedback from the fans..they may go back to the classic look. But, please..stop with this non sense of doom and gloom for the show

If you are on the 'right side of history' you will support this new burqa! (er...costume).

No, but seriously...a catsuit is fine, especially if it means she is able to exert herself more strenuously in battle, and we get lots of closeup shots as a result.

But I can definitely see long-time Supergirl fans' issues with it, since it barely resembles anything that Supergirl has worn in the comics. It looks more like the costume of Superwoman (Lois Lane and/or Lana Lang) from that recent Rebirth comic book series. This kind of television-driven costume design is yet another 'millennial-era standardization' (similar to the vast majority of costumes in Arrow, Flash and Legends) with the excuse of 'practicality in combat'.

I say 'excuse', because while it is practical, I believe there is also an additional motive behind it: the elimination of 'outmoded' ways of dress from previous generations (the way Supergirl has looked since the 60s, when mini-skirts were in vogue and considered very attractive) leads supposedly to the elimination of 'outmoded' ways of thinking from those same previous generations (second-wave 'That Girl' feminism isn't progressive enough anymore). Because apparently you cannot be 'cat'-called in a 'cat'-suit?? I agree about the bangs - they make her look dowdy and tired, but that's also because she is not smiling.

If you remember from just a little while ago, Gal Gadot also showed off a new Wonder Woman outfit with full body coverage, but we've already been assured it won't be her main outfit in WW84. Let's see if we get similar assurances from the Supergirl showrunners or not. For fans of skirt-and-hose, I sincerely hope that is the case, but if not, it would be great to see Melissa give the curves of that tight suit a real workout from every angle.

Now it's time to cleanse the palate by watching 14 minutes of what the producers of CW shows seem to have forgotten: tight and shiny catsuits were in vogue in the 70s and 80s, and can do wonders for a major heroine in a TV series (in this case, the incredible Erin Gray from Buck Rogers).

Twiki's "Bee-dee-bee-dee" takes on a whole new meaning!

Well they certainly didn't really cared much about angles during the first season...

I guess this is my "issue" with this as a new costume, if ever. Seems to me like superhero costumes are getting more and more generic with each iteration.

Well, the ratings weren't so good the whole time (as I understood it). Ok, the ratings is only one factor for the CW (streaming, Bluray-sales and so on).
And yeah, some guys just want to see her in skirt and pantyhose because it was damn sexy...and others because the skirt is/was her look in the comics for so long.
Of course I don't know how the general ratings of the show will develop (story, action and so on) ...the costume is only one of many factors....BUT I am sure ...that the new outfit will loose some viewers.
And I don't want the show to end. I will watch it as long it is on the air.
I'm just worried....nothing more.

Wow, Melissa Benoist is awesome in every costume she puts on! In my opinion Supergirl would look sensational wearing red bikini pants over the top of her blue pants with this costume, fighting some bad guys in a spectacular kryptonite peril scene.

I am sure gonna miss that old costume. I agree that GPC is totally correct in that her costume is not made for our sexual pleasure, however I do find it a shame that they mess with such an iconic costume.

It's still better than the Red Diaper look of the New 52 costume.

I think it would be improved if they shrunk the boots down to below the knee. It would help emphasize the sleekness of the unitard look.

I liked the previous skirted costume better, but since I'm not really watching the show any more there's no point in complaining.

Not a fan of this new "generic" costume. I prefer the original one but it doesn't matter since I stopped watching a few seasons ago.

This new suit looks the one from Supergirl XXX: An Axel Braun Parody. Not sure if that was what they were going for but there is a resemblance.

From looking around social media and etc the last couple of days......its a 50-50 split on the new costume...which pegs the question...with how powerful social media is...you think that the creators and showrunners of the show will go back to the classic Supergirl costume at some point later in the season...or no?

To be honest, I'm hoping that the showrunners decide that she can use the different suits at different times for different purposes. That would make the most sense to me from both a fashion perspective and a practicality perspective. But we'll see.

The traditional costume is a part of what defines the character for some fans. I can see how changing the costume is akin to a personality change for the character.
I feel as though the change is just a part of the shift away from having any sexual element associated with mainstream super heroines. The argument that Supergirl's outfit makes more sense isn't adequate for me as we are talking about an entirely unrealistic premise to begin with.
And in the end, the article that suggests fans like it is merely some writer asking a select group of people for an answer they already know they will get. Many fans like Supergirl because she is a beautiful super heroine and her outfit highlighted her attractiveness. This outfit takes away a certain amount of her attractiveness.
