Rules for the Story Section
(UPDATED 2/9/2015)
SGZ6 Here,
Now I know the Dungeon goes to a different style than the regular story section but just a couple rules that ALL stories need to follow.
1. NO UNDERAGE HEROINES/HEROES/ETC: Our stories range from PG to R here on the board which is fine. Just make sure all the main characters are 18 or over. Basically anyone involved in peril/sex/etc. As I said up above this had never really been a problem and I thank you all.
NO EXCEPTIONS TO THIS RULE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
2. NO GRUESOME TORTURE/VIOLENT DEATH: Again not really a problem, and by this I mean something you'd find in a snuff film or something. Another way to say this is, IF MH HASN'T DONE IT, THEN YOU SHOULDN'T. Again pretty common sense which nobody here has violated.
3. WHEN IN DOUBT USE COMMON SENSE: Which everyone here follows well. Have a question about something ask me viva PM.
4. NO THREAD NECROMANCY: We've got lots of stories on the board stretching quite a few years back. However if said thread is more than a year old please do not comment on it. It's great you want to give feedback but in the case of a really old thread, do it viva Private Message to the Author.
4b. NO RE-POSTING STORIES: Please do not re-post a story you've already submitted to the board.

Yes Supergirl, that's right its a necklace for you....What's the matter you don't like Kryptonite?
Hmm hadn't thought of that (goes for speed dial)Danorian wrote:For your helmet problem, try some liquid green K, then invite a particular Kryptonian Kutie to help remove it! :-D
My 2 cents.

Why are stories being deleted from this section?
Were stories deleted or did they get moved to the other section?tmon wrote:Why are stories being deleted from this section?

I moved some a while back to the Dungeon, forgot to leave a follow link in place. Any I move in the future will have that.admin wrote:Were stories deleted or did they get moved to the other section?tmon wrote:Why are stories being deleted from this section?

it seems we have a new member posting stories. Unfortunately he probably has at least a 100 or more which are also available over at Hipcom forum. After he start posting the other writers just drifted out of the forum while their stories just overwhelmed by number. Somebody should do something.

I agree its overpowering but I posted two stories concurrently, and I just added to whichever one I was in the mood to write and others may well contribute the same way, so I think a 1 story limit is too far, but equally 33 or whatever we have now is way o.t.t.Centurion wrote:I quite agree. I think there should be a limit of one story at a time.

I don't mean that as an attack on creativity, I am happy for new members to post, but just believe in all things in moderation.

My problem is he posts the same story here and at Hipcom. Probably because he isn't getting any feedback there.

Long time no chat. Hope all is well.
I was going through some of our older stories back from the early days of this forum and began to wonder if there is any way of creating a sticky of the CHARACTER HANDBOOK. It makes for great source material and is still an excellent read seven years later.
Of course there should be some type of acknowledgement to our departed friend/mentor - cthulu1.
Just a suggestion.

I can do that, I'll find the thread and post a sticky.phoxy_brown wrote:S

It looks like cthulu went back and deleted the character handbook! What do say we start compiling another one? Creators could do profiles of their own characters and readers could contribute profiles of their favorite characters. The only drawback is they wouldn't be in alphabetical order. What do you think?
Here's another thing I want to bring up. The other day someone bumped an old story from 2010! Now, I definitely do NOT want to discourage you from leaving public comments! Writers need feedback like we need air to breathe! But this only confuses things. We all read this story three years ago and suddenly out of the blue it's at the top of the queue again? And not because the writer had updated it; someone just left a comment. So please, if you must comment on a story that's over six months old, send the writer a PM or an email.
Good Point in fact that's going to be a new story rule.Centurion wrote:Here's another thing I want to bring up. The other day someone bumped an old story from 2010! I'm not sure about this coming in as a rule as there are what 400 stories here and not everyone has read them all. I think someone posting a comment helps draw attention to a story that might be overlooked - I hadn't read the recently commented on TOSG story that was from 2009, but it got a reply, I noticed it, read it and enjoyed it. Helped focus on a fun little adventure.
I'm just not sure there should be a statute on comments. I appreciate its been brought in as a rule now but maybe things like this should be decided by a poll?
If you have read the story how hard is it to look at the posted date (you can tell if something had a few thousand views that its been around a bit)
I've read only around 20-30 stories here so far , (don't have the time) someone drawing attention to something they have liked is a help.
I'm not against it coming in if that's how it is and most people feel the same, and I do appreciate it can be frustrating if you think something is new and you have already read it, but is it really a problem warranting a rule?
Just felt a poll would have been a good option in this case, where its more a rule on accepted protocol than actual content.
Just my thoughts.

That's a good point. I remember that story and was glad to be reminded of it. But looking at it from the index page, you can't tell the date it was first posted, only the date of the last comment. Your first assumption (if you don't recall the title) is that it's a new story. That's cool if it's a good story, but not so cool if it's a story you read three years ago and didn't like.tallyho wrote:I'm not sure about this coming in as a rule as there are what 400 stories here and not everyone has read them all. I go browsing in the old stories every now and then, when I have some spare time. But if you bump every good story you read, the forum would be a mass of confusion. I prefer to leave them more or less in the order they were originally posted. That's my take on it at least.

Most forums I have participated in, a thread that garners a comments is bumped up. Generally, if it's being commented on, that makes it a current topic. Personally, I think that if you read a story you like, you ought to be able to comment on it in the thread. I am new here, though, so take what I say with a grain of salt. Just my humble opinion, though.

Is the final call about posting on stories to not do it if they are over a year old? I've had time to go through some of the stories of the past and I've really been enjoying a few hidden gems, and I would comment on one or two of them if it is permitted. If something hasn't moved for between 13-16 months, is that beyond the pale, or can I still comment on it? No harm done if so - I can pm the writer.
Lost in the night, and there is no morning.
It's often ignored anyway and lately two stories from 2009 and 2011 were commented on. I personally think it's great to discuss something someone liked and since the original date of posting is shown now, if people have read an old story they can just ignore it, so I think the anti -posting argument is fairly moot.
I think it would be cool as an author to have long forgotten stories raised again (I stress it's never happened to me!)
I discovered two nice little older works a while back because sometone passed comment. With something like 500 stories on the board I welcome someone pointing me in the direction of something good. Plus when you pm some authors as I did you might not get a response as they no longer frequent the forum for whatever reason.
Publish (posts) and be damned, I say!

Not to be a complainer but I notice a lot of the authors don't finish their stories which is annoying.
Best thing to do is to ask them to.Bronson881 wrote:Not to be a complainer but I notice a lot of the authors don't finish their stories which is annoying.
Forums which I write on, those that I've written on the most, are the ones where I've felt my work has been appreciated. So if you read a story, and you like it, say so. Writers are the same whether they just won a Pulitzer prize or if they write slash fic on a Star Trek board- they like to be told that their work is enjoyed.
Tell people you like their work and you'll see more of it. Nothing like feeling appreciated to motivated a writer, especially for free.

Guilty as charged, I could seen an argument for requesting only complete stories be posted but I do enjoy the challenge of creating a story on the fly. Perhaps as a compromise the post title could indicate if the story is complete or not so readers know if they wish to commit time to reading an unfinished work ?Bronson881 wrote:Not to be a complainer but I notice a lot of the authors don't finish their stories which is annoying.

I think the idea about noting whether a story is finished or not is fine in theory but a bit trickier in practice.
For myself, I tend to have very long-running series that I update every few weeks or so. I know I am an exception in this regard but may I suggest that an unfinished label should not be "applied" until there is a gap of two months since the last posting.

True, some story arcs can be quite big but at least yours has progress being made on them. I guess the underlying issue for readers is that a story could range from anythink like an opening chapter that has been inactive for months, a big incomplete story which had a chapter added yesterday or a gem of a short story that is complete but was put up and buried months ago amongst unfinished 1 chapter intros'.DrDominator9 wrote:I think the idea about noting whether a story is finished or not is fine in theory but a bit trickier in practice.
