Re: Batwoman - Season 1
I'm honestly kind of fine with this, unless they just totally botch the character in general, but the TV version of Kate was already pretty far and away not even close to the bad ass Kate we got during Batwoman's most recent and all to brief comic run.
Still, this is a pretty huge development.

Kinda ironic...Batwoman takes over for Batman who has abandoned Gotham, new Batwoman takes over from the old Batwoman who has abandoned Gotham...Visitor wrote: ↑6 years agohttps://www.yahoo.com/entertainment/bat ... 45373.html
Plans to create a new character, not Kate Kane, to assume the Batwoman mantle. Pretty much going in a completely new direction without the sisterly fighting, dad/daughter relationships, and relation to Batman. Although they are keeping the lesbian part of Batwoman.
I'm not misunderstood, I'm just that bad!

"....he new character is named "Ryan Wilder" (whether that's a placeholder name is unclear) and is described as a woman in her mid-20s who "is about to become Batwoman."
"She’s likable, messy, a little goofy and untamed. She’s also nothing like Kate Kane, the woman who wore the batsuit before her," the notice reads, according to Decider. "With no one in her life to keep her on track, Ryan spent years as a drug-runner, dodging the GCPD and masking her pain with bad habits. A girl who would steal milk for an alley cat could also kill you with her bare hands, Ryan is the most dangerous type of fighter: highly skilled and wildly undisciplined. An out lesbian. Athletic. Raw. Passionate. Fallible. And very much not your stereotypical All-American hero."
Yeah, it really seems to be true.....
I thought it would be some very quiet months after season 1 has ended and it was announced that season 2 won't start until january.
How wrong I was!
First the news with Ruby ....and now this!!!!
Which now brings up so much more questions!
How will Kate exit the show?
I mean, if Ruby isn't there they can't have any more scenes with Kate...only some scenes with Batwoman, where she is only shown from certain angles so it wouldn't be 100% clear that it isn't Ruby under that cowl.
So does Kate just leaves without any scenes at all in the first episode?
Or will Batwoman (the Kate Kane version) be killed in the very first episode of season 2?
I don't think they can make this drastic change look any "good" in that first episode....
And having a completely new Batwoman would really make look season 1 ....bad. All these storyline would be ended so abruptly, that it would feel weird at least...
With the introduction of a new character the whole Kate/Alice/Mary/Jacob relationsships collapse. And the new Bruce Wayne storyline would make way less sense.
-----
Will Kate Kane return at some point?
On Twitter I read the theory that this new Batwoman would be a temporary replacement and that Kate Kane would return at some point.
Well, ok, this could work, but why would they do it?
Right now they have enough time to re-cast Kate before they start filming....
.....UNLESS....they already have a Kate Kane/Batwoman! But that actress is bound to other projects for the next months/year and will join the show at a later point. Of course then Kate can't be killed in the first episode of season 2....she would need to disapear.
----
I hope that somehow that isn't true and WB/CW will make an official announcement that this news is "fake".
I was somehow ok with Ruby leaving, even I thought she did make a good job.
But this now.....brings up some many question marks!
Hopefully there will be more news on this very soon.

Re: Batwoman - Season 1
This "new" version of Batwoman sounds like it would be better suited to a Cassandra Cain version of Batgirl.
Either way they're going to have a tough time writing this in, or they could just reboot the entire series and say season 1 was just some drugged up dream in Alice's mind. As it stands right now it throws a huge monkey wrench into relationships and plot holes which isn't something a series that suffers from mostly weak writing needs at this point.

Having season 1 as some sort of dream or fantasy would be the worst possible solution in my opinion as it would devalue the whole season 1.RedMountain wrote: ↑6 years ago.....

.....
So far, my favorite solution would be to find a reason why Kate has to leave Gotham for a longer period. Which would work with my weird theory/hope that they might already have a Kate Kane/Batwoman, but the actress is still occupied with other porjects. In that version the new Batwoman would take the lead for a couple of months until Kate Kane returns. After that the new Batwoman would perhaps go on in the team.
The writers did mostly a good job in my opinion as the storylines in season 1 are full with some really good surprising twists. There was some bad writing, but that's nothing surprising for such a show with 20+ episodes and a rather limited budget.
I hope that they can make this work.

Sorry an undiscplined fighter is not the most dangerous type of fighter, they can easily be defeated by anyone with skill.. Ask any martial arts teacher, police academy teacher of military trainer.
If you look at the top non powered fighters in D.C or Marvel how many fit this description? none.

Hard to say how she becomes Batwoman, but she will have to evolve to fullfill that role.
------------------------------
Comicbook.com thinks the casting call with the new character MAY not be real....
The casting notice was discovered by Batwoman fans on Reddit and, when it started to circulate widely online, was pulled. It is possible that the notice was not real, although it is more likely that it was not intended for circulation in places where the public could easily find it. It is also possible that the new name and character description is a misdirect, and that what producers really want is for actors to send in their takes on Batwoman without trying to copy what Rose has already done.

Re: Batwoman - Season 1
Sounds crazy to have a new character but it might work. I mean if the show is good the show is good, this kind of background farting around is really only a sideshow.
I'd be really happy to have a character with less family baggage though. It's like every hero since Buffy has to have their little family of weirdos following them around.

Caroline Dries explains the decision to pull Kate off the show, and it seems that Greg Berlanti made the call:
https://comicbook.com/tv-shows/news/bat ... wrunner-cw

Even it CAN work, it's a huge risk to replace the main character. Especially in this case!
I would rather see them doing a recast of Kate Kane.
But well, as long there are no infos about how they will go on from now with the storyline.... there are hundreds of ? right now.
I hope there will be some infos pretty soon.

IF that wasn't a joke....that's like saying: Bruce Wayne dies and the Joker takes over as Batman.
OK there is a storyline in the comics where Alice gets redeemed....but they are VERY far away from that in the Batwoman show as Alice is a murderous psycho with not really anything good left in her. At least at the end of season 1.

Re: Batwoman - Season 1
Ok I confess I've not caught up with Batwoman since the crisis episodes so I am a little blind. But the fate of Bruce seemed to be a big deal and if that mystery hasn't been resolved it could be a good motivator to leave town if there was a big juicy lead on his whereabouts.
As for replacing her, well... if it's an exit of her own free will she could recommend people from her military past to mind the store while she is away. Not as Batwoman of course, but we know that somehow they'll drift into that role, either by necessity or chance. Or maybe knowing she's going for good the gang set some secret test for potential candidates ... for the lolz cast some of the known candidate actors and eliminate them till the real choice remains...

Re: Batwoman - Season 1
There is an elsewhere story line where Joker is actually the hero cause he keeps a psychotic Batman busy.Maskripper wrote: ↑6 years agoIF that wasn't a joke....that's like saying: Bruce Wayne dies and the Joker takes over as Batman.

Not joking. Why can't Alice take over. Maybe she comes in evil and blackmails her way in but seeing things from the other side changes her. Would be a more interesting story. I think someone else who was bad played Batman for a while after Bane broke Wayne's back.
Besides, in our new, modern, post modern world everyone is interchangeable with everyone else and one person's right is merely another person's wrong and everyone can be everyone else cause we're all a social construct anyway. What makes Kate Kane good? Cause she's a diversity character? Past trauma? Nope. Lost loved one? Nope. Personal pain? Nope. Adversity? Nope. Seeing the horrors of evil in combat? Nope. So what makes Kate Kane good? Is it merely her turn?
All rules of literature have gone out the window anyway so who cares who plays Bat-whatever. Stories, plots, character development... all stuff that should die cause its oldy stuff.

Some facts for a change ...to repel some of the annoying rumors that were circulating:
https://twitter.com/carolinedries/statu ... 09/photo/1
Well, that leaves the door open for Kate Kane to return later on. I'm really happy about the news!
Would have felt totally wrong to "just" kill a stunt Batwoman (aka not Ruby) in the next episode and her her storyline like that.
My wild theory: Somehow I think they already have an actress for Kate Kane, but she isn't available at the moment, but will then show up later at the end of season 2.

Reading the comments I didn't hear about the accident that left a production assistant paralysed. That's really terrible and I can really see why Ruby Rose might have wanted out after her own near miss, which was also a very serious accident in its own right. All sounds a bit messed up and starting to wonder if the whole thing might be doomed, but then it being the CW it'll still probably run for six seasons and a movie.

Re: Batwoman - Season 1
Accidents shouldn't happen ...but they do. They can "only" do their best to prevent them.
The produtction assistant accident wasn't sunt related. She was paralyzed in march, but there is/was hope that that she may recover and that the damage wouldn't be permanent..
Couldn't find any info on her current health status.
I don't know what happened exactly when Ruby got injured , but luckily she didn't suffered any permanent damage.
However I am sure she couldn't handle the workload of being a lead in a TV show.....from what I heard.
So far she was only a supporting actress in movies. Something completely different.
Also she seems pretty difficult to work with...again, from what I heard (from a reliable source).
Guess we will never know the whole story.
But that is old news anyhow.
The news from Caroline Dries was an important step in the right direction.
Killing off Kate Kane... would have been a big mistake.

Some Batwoman news from the last days:
A new promo poster has surfaced!

-
Obviously this is the full picture of the Batwoman picture that was in the original CW schedule promo some weeks ago:

The Batwoman picture was later replaced by a picture of the Batwoman signal.
-
3 things on this one are really interesting:
- Is that really Ruby Rose under that cowl? I am not sure! Looks odd.
- Batwoman never used such a rope in the show, she only used the grapel gun the swing around.
But the picture looks very similar to a famous comic cover:

-
- The cowl she is wearing on this promo poster is the version she had from episode 3-10. It isn't the current one without chin strap and the unprotected neck.
I guess they made this promo picture for a release quite some time later.
But overall I really like the promo poster!

Sounds like a very interesting event in general and especially as we should get some real news on the second season of Batwoman!
I was never in San Diego for the comic con so this online event is a good chance for me to participate.
Ok, it's not the same as a "real" comic con, but I'm really thrilled about it.
I expect some big news on the show. A short season 2 teaser would be great!
Also some casting news are most likely to be presented then.
Who will be playing this new Ryan Wilder character? ....would be the most interesting question that demands an answer!
Also any news on the storyline of season 2 would be highly welcome!
-
Looking forward to this event!
And hopefully we get some infos on season 2 in the meantime as well ;-)
-
In general any teaser and trailers on DC shows or movies are also interesting off course.
Should be an interesting day with a lot of news!

This was supposed to be the final season of Supernatural, but some episodes got shuffled to the upcoming season because of production problems. Chuck caught the bug.

Oh glad they are finding work outside Supernatural. I know Jensen does directing and voices for animations (I think he did red hood). At least they killed off everyone on that show early enough so they could go get work somewhere else without a type cast. I really do miss Bobby though. His death was probably one of the best episodes.

Folks, would you please stay ON topic, this isn't about Supernatural, Padalecki or any of that.
If you want to chat about that....create a topic.
You are spamming up this topic, and I will not tolerate that anymore, at least not in this one.
I kept calm as here was a discussion about the CW and their philosophy for a thousand posts, that was more or less OFF-topic as well.
But enough is enough.

So, to get ON topic again:
Which was your favorite episode so far and why?

Re: Batwoman - Season 1
The new Batwoman should guest star on Padalecki's new Walker show. It could be an episode where he teaches her martial arts.
The first season of Batwoman with Kate Kane was filled with Kate Kane family: dad, sister, step-mom, step-sister. I wonder if the new Ryan Batwoman will have family on the show. I would cast Chuck Norris as her dad.

“Batwoman” has found its new series lead, with Javicia Leslie set to step into the cape and cowl for the show’s upcoming second season on The CW.
“I am extremely proud to be the first Black actress to play the iconic role of Batwoman on television, and as a bisexual woman, I am honored to join this groundbreaking show which has been such a trailblazer for the LGBTQ+ community,” Leslie said.
Re: Batwoman - Season 1
It's never a good sign if you have to use words like 'untamed' to describe a character.
"What's Bob's new girlfriend like?"
"Untamed"
No one uses that terminology in real life.
Wild, yep. Unpredictable, yep. A loose cannon, possibly.
Untamed? Nope.
Only in fiction when you are trying to convince people someone is interesting. And if you have to tell people someone is interesting, then they usually aren't.

The Arrow's Stephen Amell was practically a killing machine in season one, especially with that list he got from his dear departed Dad. It's about the journey, not the destination.

Re: Batwoman - Season 1
First, here are some facts about Javicia Leslie:
- She is 33 years young and 5' 3½" (1,61 m)
- She is bisexual
- She was actually born in Augsburg, Germany (#yeah) and moved to the US as a young child
- Javicia has already (lead) TV experience as she played in TV shows such as "God Friended Me", "The Family Buisness" and "McGyver"
- According to IMDB "Javicia Leslie is also trained in Muay Thai, Boxing, Weapons, Dance, Track, and Swimming and regularly trains in an extensive Fitness Bootcamp".
-
Some pictures of Javicia:

A few Javicia links:

-
My opinion:
I love the fact that all the predictions about who the new Batwoman would be were totally wrong....never ever I heard her name in all these past weeks.
Ok, I never have seen her on my TV so far, but it's good that she has already some experience as a lead actress on TV.
So she knows about the workload that comes with it and is already used to it contrary to Ruby Rose was as she was Batwoman.
In my opinion Javicia is a little too small for the role (even shorter than Ruby) but ok, with the bat ears and the boots she will look a bit taller than she is ;-)
It's great that she does a lot of fitness and has experience in some martial arts, on her Instagram account you can find some pictures where she does different sports. I hope she will be able to do a lot of her own stunts.
I still bet that Javicia Leslie as "Ryan Wilder" will only be a temporary Batwoman and that Kate Kane will return in season 2 at one point. So, I'm sure this won't be the "only" new Batwoman we will get to watch in this season. Perhaps she will then be a sidekick/partner in the field and fights alongside the Kate Kane Batwoman.
It seems that the new Ryan Wilder Batwoman is gay and Javicia is bisexual.....but to be honest, that's not important to me. Totally ok.
However Javicia looks gorgeous and I can totally imagine her under the Batwoman cowl, looking forward to the first official images. I'm 100% sure we will get some pictures and a teaser at the DC Fandome event next month.

P.S.: I'm stunned..... Mr. X actually seems happy about something^^^

So they are creating a new character who has no connection to the Bat Franchise and giving her the Batwoman moniker.
If she can act and do a good job - great.
the best analogy I can think of is when they had a supernatural/horrr tv series called Friday the 13th. It had nothing to do with Jason and had no hockey mask baddie. They used the name to get attention. Although this character is going to based in Gotham, she has nothing to do with the franchise

Well, it can be a good thing to create a new character and not just copy all of them from the comics (with some differences here and there).Dazzle1 wrote: ↑6 years agoSo they are creating a new character who has no connection to the Bat Franchise and giving her the Batwoman moniker.

It all depends on how she will fit into the show. And I bet she will "only" be a temporary replacement as Batwoman and that Kate Kane (not Ruby) will come back to Gotham during the season. Then this new Ryan Wilder-Batwoman would become a sidekick/partner of the "real" Kate Kane Batwoman.

She's five foot three. An unpowered five foot three inch woman is going to tackle Gotham's toughest criminals? 'Cause personally I find the concept of an alien woman arriving by spaceship and exhibiting fantastic powers more believable.

Yes, as I wrote I wish she was taller too, but that way the criminals have less to hit ;-)
Kidding aside, if they could find a LGTBQ actress, with a lot of TV experience, who is 1,75m tall and has muscles like Gina Carano I would be all for it. But these are very hard to find....
So, I don't really care now if she is 1,60 or 1,70 meters.
After all it is a superhero show, it doesn't have to be that realistic.
Besides, she won't be Batwoman for long, I bet that Kate Kane will return in season 2.
And maybe the new Kate actress is taller.

Re: Batwoman - Season 1
Don't really wanna discuss that detail again, but ok....
Well, it's what the CW wants. And I think it's really funny how many complain about they wanna cast an LGBTQ actress for that role. Of course others can act that part, but such an iconic role is more or less "destined" for an actress from that community.
Nearly nobody complains that they only take white dudes for the role as James Bond. But when they just consider a black man or......a woman for the role....the internet explodes.
I know not a 100% fitting comparison, but just to show what I'm aiming for.
But when they want to have a lesbian for a lesbian role..... many seem to be offended by that.
And this is just ONE role in ONE TV show....I don't get the fuzz about it.
It's a matter of representation. They wanna take a stand. And that's a good thing. Especially it is still clearly needed to be done as the reactions show.
The straight women can get auditions for the other 99,999999% of the available roles for them. No crisis.

Re: Batwoman - Season 1
I think the thing that people like me intrinsically rebel against is this idea that they might not be casting for the best actress available for the role, that they are not casting a wide enough net, and when you hear stuff like the fact that they are actively seeking an LGBTQ actress for the role, that still rankles some like me who feel the casting of these roles should solely be merit based casting. I think the studio sort of opens themselves up for that type of criticism when they openly seek an LGBTQ actress for the role. In a society that still I think mostly favors merit based opportunities, the studio that so publicly seeks to narrowly cast a leading role on a TV show will naturally get that type of pushback, skepticism, and misgivings about the process of how the role was cast. I will say however that while I think the criticism is fair, that the Arrowverse powers that be have a very good track record in casting these leading roles and I would not be surprised if Leslie excels in the role.Maskripper wrote: ↑6 years agoDon't really wanna discuss that detail again, but ok....

I just want to say that I've watched this actress in the Greg Berlanti show, "God Friended Me" and I think she will do a fine job. I had no clue for her role in that show that she was a lesbian. She came off as endearing and also seemed like she could be a badass when it called for so I think the casting will prove well done.
Re: Batwoman - Season 1
I wonder how she's going to look in the suit and if there will be a change of colour scheme. Batwoman's colour palette is usually black red and white, and this could be a very different style.
All things considered this is a really exciting casting choice. And she's ridiculously hot which is a bonus.

It will be a different one to underline that Ryan isn't Kate. So I guess there will be some changes to it and the mask as well.
The bat ears will stay of course, so I hope they will create a mask that still covers enough of her face. (and hopefully is still (looking like) black rubber.
I hope they stick to black and red. And of course the bat logo needs to be on it as well.
I was also told that filming will start in early September.
