Supergirl a dud

Well there seems to be almost universal agreement Gunn's Supergirl was a major disaster

https://www.rogerebert.com/reviews/supe ... eview-2026

Milly Alcock did not help by following that promotion tour method of Rachel Ziegler, Bree Larsen Ncuti Gatwa of attacking your audience

The plot was uninteresting

And on superficial note, Supergirl should be blond and at least medium height.

Milly is not blonde? She looked blonde in the commercials I saw.

Re: Supergirl a dud

She is blonde in the film.

Personally, I liked it. Not on the level of let's say Wonder Woman or Black Widow, but still very enjoyable. I gave it 85%. If I wasn't so busy right now, I would have went a second time already, but I will definitely get the DVD,

I'm surprised it's taken this long for someone to post about the Supergirl film. I don't know whether that says something about the film itself or the relative health of this website. I'm still not sure whether I will see the film, I'm on the fence, probably won't see it until it lands on HBO MAX. Milly's comments didn't help, but it's not going to be a deciding factor for me.

Re: Supergirl a dud

It seems to be a problem with not just the movie itself, but also a case of the wrong movie at the wrong time.

This is a side story coming out at a point where they should be introducing the main players in the DC Universe.

I don't blame audiences for saying "Are Batman and Wonder Woman in it? No? Then why should I care?"

They've had two years to launch the new DCU, and they're still noodling around with side projects instead of showing us what the big picture is going to be. It's no wonder that audiences aren't engaged.

Thanks for the Review... I always take the word of a film reviewer that has been dead for more than a decade... Didn't he write Valley of the Dolls for Roger Corman?

I have not had a chance to see the movie myself. I will point out that part of why I am going to watch it is to see a cute cute girl in a short skirt kick some ass and hopefully find some trouble....

Plenty of movies that bomb in the theaters find cult status later one... Flash Gordon, Barbarella, the original Supergirl. I like that this one has tried to give us something other than the squeeky clean princess of the comics and television show. That version has had a movie, and a couple of TV iterations. The wheels have been coming off the Superhero cart for a while, but they have been predominantly Male superheroes. I will waste my time watching this version, and I hope to enjoy it. I doubt the female reviewer on Ebert.com has the same appreciation for the genre that I do...

Hopefully, I will be pleasantly surprised....

Re: Supergirl a dud

I'm sure the actress is appealing to some but I don't find her all that attractive and she doesn't fit the Supergirl role for me. I think not casting Melissa Benoist was their first mistake. I know that seems to be a popular opinion these days but it's how I felt from first finding out she was not chosen.

The TV series was not really my thing but Melissa is definitely my thing. I didn't like when they changed to a bodysuit and gave her bangs.

Re: Supergirl a dud

Judging from the small sample of comments here I think it's worth a watch, even if it's on streaming and not at the cinema. It's Supergirl. It's a movie. In terms of peril, I don't know what's there. Personally, for gender symmetry, I wouldn't mind SG and The Engineer bringing their best moves to a fight though I don't think that's in this adventure. I had hoped The Engineer character had been preserved for that reason.

I also liked the clinical strategies of Lex Luthor in the recent Superman effort and the fights that they had. I had hopes that someone would bring that action to Supergirl too. I will have to see what else happens instead.

I wouldn't have minded seeing Melissa Benoist again, but I don't think there ever was a chance.
Melissa is 38, Milly 26. It was very unlikely they would have chosen Melissa for the movie, especially so early on in the new DC run, where they wanted her to be available for a number of films, spanning many years. I mean, the MCU is running for what now, 20 years or so? Even if we take only half of that, the studios would have never gone for a Supergirl, who by the end would have been close to 50.

Re: Supergirl a dud

Melissa was a great Supergirl on TV, but they weren't going to spend that kind of money on a TV movie. The point of the movie is to launch a new franchise around the character. Milly is a quirky kind of cute and, from what I have seen matches the SG of the comic book source material (if not the SG we were used to seeing). Remaking the SG of TV as a feature film would have likely bombed even harder, considering how expensive movie tickets are and how widely available the old show (which only wrapped a couple of years ago) is.

DC seems to consistently do better making TV shows than features, maybe that is the space they should continue to occupy.

The area that D.C does best seems to be animation

Re: Supergirl a dud

Regarding the choice of actress, you could see in the CW series the progression of the Kara Danvers character, she was certainly more Superwoman than Supergirl by the end. I knew it was a logical development of the character but I was missing the Cat Grant / Kara D interactions as boss and PA toward the end which added a mirror world for the Supergirl persona with different challenges and hazards.

I've not got much viewing time of Milly, so will be seeing her with little to no expectations which might work in the movie's favour.
